About Jinyu

Age: 11 months Weight: 30-35 pounds Rescue: Jinyu is a Soi Dog rescued from the illegal dog meat trade in Southeast Asia by Soi Dog Foundation, our partner rescue based in Thailand. He and a group of his friends traveled from the SDF facility in Phuket and were flown stateside to The Barking Lot in December 2018.  Temperament: Friendly, social, silly, fun-loving, and happy-go-lucky. Jinyu is a good-natured pup who gets along well with everyone he meets. Jinyu's left hind leg was amputated after a road traffic accident prior to arriving at SDF, but it certainly doesn't slow him down any!  If you'd like to meet this pup, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt

Charlie, affectionately dubbed Little Shop, is a special guy in the hearts of TBL volunteers. He is great with other dogs, loves treats, loves toys, knows how to sit on command, housetrained, crate trained, and very affectionate. Despite his adorable, cuddly and fluffy exterior, this little 30 pound fella does need some time and space when meeting new people. Charlie will require a patient and experienced owner who will understands that he takes more time than the average pup to trust and be 100% comfortable with his surroundings. Since he can be very sensitive to quick and sudden movements toward him, he will be best in a home with no children. As long as there is a mutual understanding and trust established, Charlie really is a sweet and loving little dude. He likes it best if you let him approach you for petting, and when he does he will nuzzle you for extra rubs behind his ears and try to curl up in your lap. The first time Charlie went home with a volunteer, he did not have a single accident, and immediately picked up a toy to play with and ran around the yard, simply chipper as can be. He loves treats more than anything and has taken treats out of hands on a flat palm. We have seen him thrive and shine in a warm and loving environment; just check him out with his favorite volunteer at our most recent WADIN event! Charlie knows it can be hard for an older dog to find a forever home, especially if he is the sort of fellow who requires a little more patience and understanding than other dogs, but he cannot give up hope and neither will we. Charlie is 9 years old as of late 2018 and we know just what his Christmas wish will be!  If you'd like to meet Charlie, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt show less

Meet Churro! This handsome boy is as smart and well-behaved in person as he looks in his pictures. Churro was rescued from San Bernardino and he is now awaiting his forever family in the comfort of a foster home. Churro’s foster parents have endless complimentary things to say about this wonderful boy. He loves to relax and lay on the floor or couch while his foster parents watch TV. He is incredibly respectful of little dogs (the house alpha is a Chihuahua), and coexists harmoniously with the resident felines. Churro is very intelligent and trainable, loves all food and treats, and knows a bunch of commands such as sit, lay down, watch me, fetch, drop it, and even wait. He is completely crate trained, and will voluntarily stay in or go into his kennel, content to chew on his toys. His favorite toys are the soft ones, and he carries around an emptied plush toy like a security blanket. Churro was a little wary about certain spots being touched when he first started living with his foster people, but he soon built trust over time and now he is totally okay with his paws, back legs, and tummy to be rubbed all the time. He especially enjoys getting his back scratched, and is an absolute cuddle bug. Churro loves going to the groomers, and they all give him amazing report cards for being so good. He weighs around 85 pounds, and he’s like a big goofy puppy sometimes when he shows off his playful side, though is a fully grown adult just over 8 years old as of late 2018. Churro would make an excellent loyal companion, and he is ready to meet his forever people! If you'd like to meet Churro, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt. show less

There is hardly anyone more enchanting than Enchilada! Meet Enchilada, the 4-year-old golden-eyed charmer. We originally rescued Enchilada from a shelter in Coachella Valley. She was adopted out into a home, but was recently returned to us through no fault of her own. Her previous owner got cancer and had to move into a hospice, so she could no longer care for Enchilada. When Enchilada first returned to TBL, she was very insecure. We are not sure whether it was her change of circumstance, or the stress of what was going on in her last home, but as a result, we moved her into a foster home to help her get some much-needed confidence and structure. We are pleased to share that Enchilada is doing fantastic in foster care! In her foster home, Enchilada is very well-behaved, sweet, docile and highly affectionate. Enchilada is house broken, crate trained, knows all of her basic commands and can learn any new command with just a few repetitions. After an initial adjustment period, she now gets along very well with her two canine foster brothers. She does not seem to have a preference to men or women and is happy to get attention from anyone! Enchilada is not accustomed to being around children, and would therefore do best in an adults-only household. She does not have any separate anxiety, and she is not destructive at all. She absolutely loves walks and would be a great dog to take on hikes, go for a run, or stroll around the neighborhood. She is also happy to sit on the couch and binge watch movies with you. Enchilada is a beautiful dog with a very soft and unique multi-colored coat, and she is a great medium size of around 45-50 pounds. She also has a great personality which continues to emerge as she settles into her foster home!   If you'd like to meet Enchilada, please visit http://www.thebarkinglotrescue.com/adopt show less

Meet Joe, a sweet and docile soul inside and out! Joe was saved by our partner rescue Save Korean Dogs. He was bred as dog meat to be sold in the Korean dog meat trade. Many of these dogs were born into total darkness, never felt sunshine on their backs, or knew any human interactions as they were kept in cages raised above the ground. This was life as Joe knew it, and as such, he was very afraid of human touch when he first arrived at The Barking Lot in November. As you may have seen in our social media videos early on, Joe would cower and flinch if you touched his fur, and he did not understand the concept of leash walking in the slightest. Fast forward a few months, and Joe is making us all incredibly proud with his progress and how far he has come! As of April 2018, he has been promoted to one of our front office greeters. Joe is blossoming in foster care with our director, coming up to volunteers who come in and out of the office to say hello, and going on daily walks which he has grown to love. One of his new favorite American pastimes is getting Puppuccinos at the neighborhood Starbucks every morning with his foster siblings. Joe is still bashful around new people, but he comes more and more out of his shell with each passing week. He is a curious, playful, mild-mannered, and engaging boy. Joe is about 1 year 8 months old, and he is a great medium size of about 45-50 pounds. If you would like to give Joe the forever home he is so deserving of, let us know!   If you'd like to meet Joe, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt. show less

If you are a fan of Dante from the Disney Pixar movie Coco, then you are sure to love his real life doppelganger, Kyle! Kyle was saved by our partner rescue Soi Dog Foundation and came to us all the way from Thailand in May 2018. He was in pretty bad shape when he first arrived at the SDF facility, and was clearly neglected and mistreated in his past life. Since his unique hairless coat requires some extra care, we have placed him in foster with one of our volunteers in the meantime, and he is thriving! Kyle is currently learning a lot about daily life in an American home and what it is like to be an American dog. He is a friendly, engaging, and affectionate fella who enjoys being pet. He likes to gives big sloppy kisses on your face if presented with an opportunity. Kyle loves food and he is very treat motivated, which helps him pick up training at a good pace. His foster parents are working on housetraining with him, and he has already learned how to sit and perform certain touch commands in a short time span. Kyle shares his foster home with 2 other dogs, and while he gets along quite well with them, he prefers to stay out of their way and observe their interactions. He enjoys his walks and has no trouble keeping up on nice long strolls and hikes. Skincare wise, Kyle would need sunscreen if he is going to be out in the sun for long periods of time, but otherwise, the occasional application of lotion whenever his skin feels dry goes a long way. His foster mom ordered him his own doggie sunsuit to wear on outings - he definitely rocks that look! Kyle is roughly 4 years old and tips the scales at about 55 pounds. Kyle would love a forever home to call his own! If you'd like to meet Kyle, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt   show less

If you bring Loveland home, we promise she will give you all the love in all the land! Say hello to Loveland, an adorable and snuggly little Maltipoo. Loveland was sprung from a kill shelter in Los Angeles county with a mad scientist hairdo and in desperate need for a good grooming. She got just that, and she is currently awaiting her forever people in a foster home! Loveland is a sweet, engaging, loving, affectionate, loyal, communicative, silly, and cuddly little old lady. It is hard to know her age for sure, but our best guess is about 8 years young. Since she weighs all of 10 pounds, she can transition easily into virtually any type of home. Loveland is a lapdog and she feels right at home tucked under your arm or curled up on top of you while you are watching TV. Her screening process for new friends involves a quick sniff and tail wag, then she will matter-of-factly invite herself right into your lap. Loveland is a quick learner. Though she was not crate trained initially, she picked up the concept extremely quickly after just 1 night in foster, and now she sleeps through the night in her crate without a peep until it is time for her morning walk. She is working on housetraining next. Loveland is very food motivated, and will do a little dance or pretend to be a meerkat whenever there are treats present. She likes to be the first to let you know if someone is at the door or if something exciting is happening. She gets along well with other dogs and cats alike, is very easy on a leash, and has an adorable little prance when she walks. Her fleecy coat will need grooming from time to time, but it is also fairly low-shedding. On any given day, you will likely find her curled up on a plush surface somewhere, or following you around like a happy little shadow. Loveland just wants to be near her human at all times. If Loveland sounds like the perfect companion pup for you, let us know ASAP!   If you'd like to meet this pup, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt show less

Say hello to Peep, who has been a total model foster pup! Peep originally came to us from Mexico extremely emaciated. Today, she has filled out nicely to her ideal weight of 40-45 pounds, and is currently awaiting her adoption day from the comfort of a foster home. She is a friendly, affectionate, engaging, fun, and silly girl loves to play. She is great on the leash, is housebroken, and crate trained, although she does not really ever need to be crated. Peep gets along very well with other dogs, and she would love to go to a home with another at least one other canine companion. She currently shares her foster home with a few other dogs including a Husky foster sister whom she follows around and sleeps with at night. Peep is a ham for affection and enjoys being closer to her humans. Though she can be a bit bashful when first meeting new people, she warms up quickly in no time. Peep is a sweet and gentle soul who is also very loyal and loving to her people. She gets super excited when her foster parents come home and enjoys cuddling with them on the couch. She is also super quiet - they have only heard her bark once in the last handful of weeks! Peep turns 6 years old in February 2019 and a forever home to call her own would be the best birthday gift ever! If you'd like to meet this pup, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt show less

Here is a fun fact about our pretty girl Pinky: she was actually featured as Pet of the Week for South Bay and Harbor Area shelters! How she found herself in the shelter system in San Pedro beats us, but she has come a long way since her rescue. She spent a few months in foster with our director, where she lived in harmony with resident dogs and learned her house manners. Today, Pinky is housetrained, knows her basic commands, knows fetch, is good with dogs, and loves to gives kisses to her favorite human companions. She does need a firm and experienced owner who can show her right from the beginning that Pinky is not in charge, but once you set those initial boundaries with her, she is just like any other happy-go-lucky pooch. Pinky likes to spend her time roaming the play yards, wrestling with her canine buddies, or chasing after toys you throw for her. She also enjoys going on walks or skateboard-walks with some of our volunteers! Pinky is a playful, active, loving, and great dog who would make a wonderful hiking or running buddy. She just turned 8 years old in May 2018. She tipped the scales at an even 50 pounds at her last weigh-in. If you think Pinky sounds like the right girl for you and you are up to the task of giving this long-timer a well-deserved forever home, Pinky will joyfully reciprocate with a lifetime of cuddles and kisses! The name Popeye likely puts in mind large strong muscles, and while it does describe this big strong guy, Popeye is sweet as honey and has a heart of gold! Popeye has proved to be a delightful house guest in a foster home in the past. He is a smart cookie who knows Sit, Leave It, Off, Stay, Down, and Shake. He is completely housetrained and got along wonderfully with all 5 other resident dogs, ranging in various size and age. We have seen him kiss a 10 pound Chiweenie, or snuggle up against a big Leonberger mix. Popeye is a handsome, goofy, friendly, happy and playful 7-year-old (as of May 2018) with a lot of love to give.  Do not let the big muscles fool you: this guy is all heart and is the gentlest cuddler in the world. Popeye is a romantic guy, ready for long walks on the beach followed by a quiet snuggle session. Popeye is great on a leash and has an easy-going demeanor. He is also an athletic boy and would make a great hiking and running partner. He ran 4-7 miles per day with his foster parents, and is great at keeping pace! Did we mention that he is a rock star and  fan favorite on weekend hikes? Popeye is ready for someone to take him home. In the meantime, this 70-pound lover will continue to charm his way into all of our hearts! If you'd like to meet Popeye, please visit http://www.thebarkinglotrescue.com/adopt. show less

This is the story of Shake, a Korean dog meat trade survivor who has come a long long way, both physically and figuratively speaking! Shake was saved by our partner rescue Save Korean Dogs. She was bred as dog meat to be sold in the Korean dog meat trade. Many of these dogs were born into total darkness, never felt sunshine on their backs, or knew any human interactions as they were kept in cages raised above the ground. This was life as Shake knew it, and as such, she was incredibly afraid of everyone and everything when she first arrived at The Barking Lot. She would run from all volunteers, cower in corners, and would work herself into a frenzy if anyone ever tried to get a leash around her neck. To her credit, she was always great around other dogs, with whom she felt a sense of familiarity and comfort. With lots of consistency and patience, Shake would eventually stop running away at the sight of people, and would even allow volunteers to pet her without flinching. Then, as you may have seen on our social media videos, she began to learn how walk down the sidewalk on a lead! Slowly but surely, she got more and more used to daily routines. Today, Shake is enjoying the life of a foster dog with our director, and she has wowed us all with her progress. For a dog that was deemed to be feral upon arrival, Shake has made leaps and bounds of progress in just a few short months. Today, you can see her amongst our front office greeters, coming up to sniff people curiously as they went about their business. At home, Shake is very obedient, inquisitive, and engaging. She is 100% crate trained (as is the case with all of our Korean dog meat trade survivors - they recognize the crate as their safe place), and has never had an accident at home to date. She caught onto the tight schedule that the rest of the pack ran on and assimilated with ease. One of her new favorite American pastimes is getting Puppuccinos at the neighborhood Starbucks every morning with her foster siblings. Shake has been cat tested and she has done as well around felines as she has around other dogs. Though still incredibly shy around new people, she is coming more and more out of her shell with each passing week. Shake is just a few months over 1 year old, and she is a great medium size of 30 pounds. If you would like to give Shake the forever home she is so deserving of, let us know!   If you'd like to meet Shake, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt. show less

Size is no indication of personality, and this holds very true for our favorite low-rider Shorty! He is a bundle of fun packed into a stout 40-pound package. We rescued Shorty in November from San Bernardino where he was picked up as a stray. He has gorgeous red and white coloring, a short and easy-to-care-for coat, inquisitive chestnut colored eyes, and a sturdy and adorable low-to-the-ground physique. Shorty has the strength and affection of a Staffy and the sweet nature of a Bassett. He is a natural people-pleaser and will happily wag his tail at the sight of you. He enjoys treats and is all paws on deck when it comes to training and rewards time. When we get him out on a leash, he is eager to explore and loves to check out his surroundings. When we sit down with him for some quality one-on-one time, he will snug right up nice and close and gently wag his tail while enjoying a nice patting. Shorty is 6 years old as of late 2017, and he still has a whole lifetime of love and affection to give to his true forever family! Venus has got it all! She is ridiculously adorable, and she is very well-behaved. Venus is a great pup. This Shiba Inu/Cattle dog mix captures the hearts of many, and rightfully so. Venus is a Soi Dog rescued from the illegal dog meat trade in Southeast Asia by Soi Dog Foundation, our partner rescue based in Thailand. She and a group of her friends traveled from the SDF facility in Phuket and were flown stateside to The Barking Lot in November 2017. As of June 2018, Venus is enjoying the comfortable life of a foster dog, and she is pretty darn perfect! She is intelligent, fun-loving, very playful with other dogs, is housebroken, rarely barks, loves to give soft kisses, is non-destructive, and rides in the car like a champ. Venus can be skittish around sudden movements, but she has truly come a long way. She does a little jig when she sees the leash come out, and will sit directly in front of her foster mom to ensure she does not get overlooked for her walk. The only thing Venus loves more than going on walks is getting Puppuccinos at the local Starbucks. So much so, in fact, that those little paper cups never stand a chance - she tears them into 26 pieces every time, making sure to get every last drop. She is just under 6 years old and weighs about 35 pounds. Venus is a good dog and will make a great new pack addition to one lucky family!   If you'd like to meet Venus, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt. show less
