I am a cat in a dog's body, so please treat me like you would a cat. Except I'm better than a cat, because I'm a dog.' Albus is still figuring out how this beloved family dog thing works. He's aloof when meeting new people, but the more you spend time with him, the more he'll start nudging your hand and leaning into you for pets. When he's really comfortable, he'll plow his head right into your hands and loves getting massages. He's also very in tune with his person's feelings and will put his head on your knee and looking lovingly into your eyes. And when he smiles, Albus' face shines as bright as the sun. Once you've earned his trust, this sweet guy will do anything for you. He's very treat-motivated and loves cheese, so that can help speed things along. On sleepovers with volunteers, Albus has proven to be an excellent houseguest and never got up on the furniture, even when invited. He has a nice low to medium energy level and walks really well on leash and gives amazing eye contact. He also enjoys going to playgroup with his canine friends at the shelter and could go home with a well-matched doggie sibling. Although Albus is a lower energy fella, he still enjoys running the agility yard at the shelter. He's also making great strides in APA!'s Total Obedience Program, which is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Albus has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! Albus is learning skills like sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told 'free,' coming when called and 'place', which means he will go to a specific place in your home on command. Once Albus successfully completes all the skills on his training plan, he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! And as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with him after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA's CGC program, on which the TOP was based: https://vimeo.com/89434193 This sweet old soul would love a quieter home where he can slip into a nice routine. In return, he'll be the most loving and loyal companion you could hope for. Come meet him! show less

Gentle, Sweet, Aloof Almond is a classic brown and black tabby with a cute white muzzle. Though he can be nervous at first, once he gets to know you, he will give vigorous head butts in exchange for his favorite thing: head scratches. Almond isn't one for life in the fast lane - he prefers to take things slow. He's not into playing and he's very quiet - he just wants to live life at his own pace. Almond can be easily startled so it's very important that his forever home be a calm, predictable environment. He's started to blossom in his foster home and has shown a very sweet side, but it took some time to get there. He hasn't met other cats or dogs, but it's likely that, unless they were extremely quiet and slow-moving, he would do best as a single cat. The ideal home for Almond would be long on patience and love and short on noise and upheaval and would include loving humans who will pay attention to his behavioral cues and be willing to work with him while he gains confidence. We think he will continue to blossom if given a chance. Almond has tested positive for Feline Leukemia. FeLV is not a type of cancer. It's a virus that causes a weaker immune system and often a shorter life-span. For the most part, 'FeLVies' are just like any other cat. APA! waives the adoption fees of these cats, and provides FeLV-related treatment and support post-adoption. Almond can only live with other FeLV+ cats, but dogs and other animals are just fine! Any questions? We'd love to talk with you about FeLV care. All APA! cats are fully vetted, spayed or neutered, and have updated vaccines and a microchip. Lifetime support is offered by our Cat Behavior Team. For further information or to meet Almond, please email adopt@austinpetsalive.org. show less

Sleek, affectionate, elegant Annie came to us as a young pregnant kitty. She had four kittens of her own and took in two more orphans, which she raised as lovingly as she raised her own. Her babies have found forever homes, and now it's her turn! At first we thought she was a feral outdoor cat. But since she's been in foster, she's warming up, is much more affectionate and relaxed, and even sleeping on her foster's bed! She lets her fosters pick her up, and enjoys lying next to them and getting pets. She's probably not feral at all, but was just terrified to find herself pregnant and out on her own. Annie is still spooked by people she doesn't know, and by lots of human activity. She'll need time to feel safe and warm up to her new family. But give her the time she needs, and she'll be fine, loving, and ever so grateful. Annie is a young kitty, so she enjoys her early morning playtime. She also loves high places, window-gazing, and her toys and scratching post. Annie had digestive issues while on her previous diet, but her issues cleared up when her fosters started feeding her Solid Gold Dry Cat food (Katz-N-Flocken Real Lamb & Brown Rice flavor) and the same brand of wet food. She loves it, too! Annie would thrive in a quite home with patient people who give her all the time she needs to feel safe and comfortable. Once comfortable with her people, she'll need their continuing love, attention, and affection so she doesn't revert to her old fearful and timid ways. Would you love to give this beautiful girl the gift of a loving forever home? If so, contact us today to arrange a meet-and-greet. All APA! cats are fully vetted, spayed or neutered, and have updated vaccines and a microchip. Lifetime support is offered by our Cat Behavior Team.
