Snuggly, Calm, Patient Acorn Squash is super sweet and the perfect companion! He is a calm and gentle boy who wants to hang out on the couch with you and get a few zzzzzs! He never says no to a snuggle. Acorn isn't interested in toys - playful shenanigans are behind him. He prefers to sit on your lap but will happily sit by you when you're at your computer or arrange himself in a window sill. Acorn came to APA! with another cat but wasn't attached to him. We think he would tolerate living with another cat but doesn't need a kitty companion - he prefers human company! Acorn had his teeth extracted to alleviate his stomatitis. He is wrapping up some additional care but feels so much better! Stomatitis is an inflammation of the mouth. It is typically resolved through removal of teeth and supportive care. He currently requires some extra medical care which may include medications and specialized diet. For more information, please contact APA! Acorn has a big ol' handsome face and a heart full of love! All he needs in his home is a lap to sit on, places to nap, lots of treats, and a window perch so he can keep watch on the neighborhood. He is chill and gentle. If you're looking for a trustworthy best friend, Acorn Squash will always be by your side! Acorn Squash has tested positive for Feline Leukemia. FeLV is not a type of cancer. It's a virus that causes a weaker immune system and often a shorter life-span. For the most part, 'FeLVies' are just like any other cat. APA! waives the adoption fees of these cats, and provides FeLV-related treatment and support post-adoption. Acorn Squash can only live with other FeLV+ cats, but dogs and other animals are just fine! Any questions? We'd love to talk with you about FeLV care. All APA! cats are fully vetted, spayed or neutered, and have updated vaccines and a microchip. Lifetime support is offered by our Cat Behavior Team. For further information or to meet Acorn Squash, please email adopt@austinpetsalive.org. show less

Sweet, Loving, Couch Potato AJ's foster mom describes her as a potato cat - both the couch and sweet variety. This brown tabby girl had a rough start - she came to APA! after being removed from a hoarding situation. She also had eye surgery, which dramatically improved her vision. However, she still has a bit of trouble seeing things from a distance or in the dark, which results in an extra layer of caution on her part. AJ can be fearful at first and might hide in a small space or even hiss if she doesn't recognize you from afar. But she is never aggressive; if you approach her quietly and slowly and offer to pet her, she'll happily purr away. All AJ really wants is to laze around with her humans in a quiet space and receive pets. She's pretty quiet (other than her purring). Currently, her activity level is low, though she's begun to enjoy playing with a feather toy every now and then. Her favorite activity is warming up the couch next to you. AJ isn't a lap cat, but she will happily sit next to you and purr away, offering headbutts in exchange for all the pets and scritches you will give her. She's an excellent quarantine (and beyond!) companion. Because of her vision issues and preference for quiet, we anticipate that the ideal home for AJ would be a quiet, calm place with loving humans. Older, cat-savvy kids would probably be fine, but younger kids and most dogs probably wouldn't be a great fit. We're also not sure if she wants to live with other cats after being part of a hoarding situation. AJ requires very little to be happy and offers so much unconditional love - all she needs is a little time to adjust and you'll have a sweet, soft new friend for life. All APA! cats are fully vetted, spayed or neutered, and have updated vaccines and a microchip. Lifetime support is offered by our Cat Behavior Team. I love you and keep those treats coming!' Alabama is LOVEABLE with a capital L! He's an athletic, energetic, fun-loving pal who makes for the perfect jogging buddy. Super smart and eager to please his people, Alabama does really well on walks and is thrilled to get to sniff around in the great outdoors. If you ask him if he wants to go for a run, he'll eagerly answer yes with sweet affectionate kisses! Alabama is so happy to get out in nature that he'll press his face into the grass then wiggle worm along for several feet. He also LOVES toys and can entertain himself with them if he can't talk you into a game of fetch or tug of war. This exuberant pup/dog just has so much love for life and he can't wait to become part of yours! He's super cuddly with his people and does tippy taps and wiggles when his friends at the shelter approach his kennel, even kissing their hands and arms while they put his leash on. Alabama is house-trained and knows LOTS of skills - all of the basics as well as place and recall. He has solid leash manners, and he'd definitely love to continue to learn new tricks with you. Alabama responds well to structure, and he appreciates the routines and rules you establish. He has brain energy to spare and is very treat-motivated, so it's no surprise that he's thriving. Alabama has skills like sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told, coming when called, which means Alabama is very easy to get along with. Alabama really is the epitome of the ultimate loyal best friend, he has so much love to give his perfect family, and he can't wait to cover them in kisses! Alabama would love any home with a yard. He loves kids and adults alike. With Alabama in your life, you couldn't possibly need much more! show less

Alejandro is a beautiful pup who is ALWAYS smiling. He also makes great eye contact and seems to be asking you to play whenever he looks at you. That or 'I love you'. Alejandro has very expressive eyes, so it's never hard to tell what he's thinking. While he can be shy at first with new people, once Alejandro decides you're okay, he becomes loose and wiggly and loves being pet, snuggling and getting butt scratches. Alejandro is also so much fun to watch play. His key feature is that he hops around like a rabbit, and he looks so happy just running and bouncing around in the yard by himself! Even his version of 'fetch' is adorable. You throw the ball, he pounces on it and then throws it around to himself while you look on. But if you call his name, Alejandro always drops the ball and comes running over. He may not be able to grasp the concept of fetch just yet, but he's always very attentive. He doesn't pull much on leash and does great on walks, he rides well in the car and appears to be house-trained. He also enjoys going to playgroup with his canine friends at the shelter and could go home with a well-matched doggie sibling. While fetch isn't his strong suit, Alejandro is still a super smart pup and enjoys learning. Once Alejandro successfully completes all the skills on his training plan, he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Alejandro is working hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with him after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA's CGC program, on which the TOP was based: https://vimeo.com/89434193 Alejandro would love a quiet home with people who will give him plenty of attention and playtime. In return, he promises to be your most loyal and affectionate companion. Come meet him! Follow Alejandro on Instagram @adoptalejandro show less

Gentle, Sweet, Aloof Almond is a classic brown and black tabby with a cute white muzzle. Though he can be nervous at first, once he gets to know you, he will give vigorous head butts in exchange for his favorite thing: head scratches. Almond isn't one for life in the fast lane - he prefers to take things slow. He's not into playing and he's very quiet - he just wants to live life at his own pace. Almond can be easily startled so it's very important that his forever home be a calm, predictable environment. He's started to blossom in his foster home and has shown a very sweet side, but it took some time to get there. He hasn't met other cats or dogs, but it's likely that, unless they were extremely quiet and slow-moving, he would do best as a single cat. The ideal home for Almond would be long on patience and love and short on noise and upheaval and would include loving humans who will pay attention to his behavioral cues and be willing to work with him while he gains confidence. We think he will continue to blossom if given a chance. Almond has tested positive for Feline Leukemia. FeLV is not a type of cancer. It's a virus that causes a weaker immune system and often a shorter life-span. For the most part, 'FeLVies' are just like any other cat. APA! waives the adoption fees of these cats, and provides FeLV-related treatment and support post-adoption. Almond can only live with other FeLV+ cats, but dogs and other animals are just fine!
