Personality: Betsy is an energetic social young dog who is always eager to be with people and play rowdy with dogs. Betsy is quite affectionate but can initially be very jumpy and mouthy when excited if she has not had any playtime. She does best when she is given multiple daily outlets for her energy. She enjoys engaging in long play dates with other dogs, running, and is working on her basic obedience training. Already responds well to a hand signal "sit" since she is deaf. History: Betsy came to us from the San Jose shelter. Dog skills: Betsy regularly participates in daily playgroups. She can be very forward, rowdy, and mouthy in her play. She does best with tolerant, playful dogs that can handle her more energetic playstyle. Betsy has been cohoused with other dogs here at HSSV for the enrichment and to give her an outlet for her energetic behavior. She would do best with another playful dog or an active family that can provide her lots of exercise and play.Cat skills: We have no history of Betsy with cats. Leash skills: Betsy pulls on the leash and would benefit from a harness. Medical: Betsy may be deaf or severely hearing impaired. Deaf dogs can be taught hand signals instead of voice commands and can make wonderful pets and lead full and rewarding lives. She arrived with a minor anatomic abnormality and the medical staff performed a corrective surgery called an episioplasty on 10/15/20. She has skin sutures at her surgical site that should be removed between 10/25 and 10/29/20.Ready to meet Betsy? Personality: Buddy is a super sweet and gentle dog. He loves to be pet and to sit with people. He is a Velcro boy who prefers to stay close to his favorite humans. He is very friendly with new people. He has lived with children ages 7 and 11 while in foster. Buddy also did well with potty training in his foster home. He very treats motivated and willing to work for food and yummy treats. History: Buddy was transferred in from Fresno. Dog Skills: Buddy is a peaceful co-exister and does well with other calm, polite dogs. He may be overwhelmed with more forward, rowdy dogs. Cat Skills: Buddy has no history with cats. Leash Skills: Buddy can be timid on a leash when in new environments, once he has warmed up he walks nicely on a leash. Medical: Buddy may have a flea allergy. Pets with this condition can develop very itchy skin and hair loss even when they only have a few fleas. While at HSSV, this pet has been treated with monthly flea prevention, such as Advantage or Frontline and we highly recommend that his adopter continues these monthly treatments. Buddy has a cataract in his left eye. The condition that affected the iris also caused some scarring of the cornea, creating a white patch on the surface of the eye. No treatment is necessary for this condition and it is unlikely to cause any medical concerns in the future. Buddy presented to HSSV with a mass on his chest. The mass was surgically removed and submitted to a veterinary laboratory for analysis. The mass was found to be cancerous. These growths can invade locally in the area that they arise, and occasionally metastasize or spread throughout the body (no evidence at this time in this dog). The mass appears to have been completely removed, however, the cancer extended to the surgical margins of the biopsy sample, so re-growth in the future is possible. This is an "as-is" adoption and any further medical expenses sought out after adoption will be at the cost of the adopter.Ready to meet Buddy? Personality: Charlie is a smart and brave senior dog. Charlie is reliably housebroken. At his foster home, he has been on a regular routine with his walk. 1) early morning right after he wakes up, 2) late afternoon/evening before the sun goes down. He also has a toilet spot in the backyard and uses the place in the afternoon while he's at home. He has four dog beds and one of them is a crate. He has used the crate for his sleeping bed at night time. The crate door is always left open. Charlie has been left home alone for around 2 hours, with no issue. He may be alone longer than 2 hours, but he hasn't experienced it yet since his foster works from home. He hasn't shown any separation anxiety issues. He was shy when meeting new people and when first going into his foster home. Now that he's more comfortable he enjoys going for walks. Dog Skills: Charlie may be shy with new dogs but enjoys the company of peaceful coexisters. Cat Skills: Charlie did well with the cat in his foster home but sometimes chased birds.Leash Skills: When Charlie first went into his foster home he was afraid to walk on a leash. The longer he's been in the foster home the more confident he's become and the more he is enjoying going for walks. Medical: Charlie may have allergies to common things in his environment such as pollens, grasses, and dust mites. As a response to these allergies, dogs with this condition tend to develop itchy skin and ear infections. We have treated him with an injection called Cytopoint that targets the proteins that cause itching and he has responded very well. We recommend that his adopter visits a vet within two weeks of adoption to discuss further care. Charlie had a dental cleaning recently at HSSV. The teeth were evaluated for fractures and periodontal disease. Teeth that were determined to be unhealthy were removed. Dental care is an on-going process that will need to be addressed for the life of this patient. Charlie also has luxating patella's. This means that his knee cap on the right hind leg may spontaneously pop out of place, resulting in lameness and pain. At this time, his luxating patella is a Grade 1 out of 4 (where 1 is the least severe and 4 is the most severe). This means that the knee cap is loose and may move in and out of place spontaneously as he walks. Typically, dogs with luxating patellae walk normally until the patella moves out of place and then hop or skip for a few steps until it spontaneously returns to normal position. He is not on any medication for this condition currently. Ready to meet Charlie? Personality: Cheeto is a super playful guy who enjoys multiple play sessions per day if you're up for it. He's great at supervising chores, sleeping while the TV blares, and jumping up high to catch his favorite wand toys during playtime. He gets really invested in play sessions, and can sometimes get mouthy if you stop paying attention to him during play so keep your eyes on this prize! Cheeto isn't a cuddle bug, but he's tolerant of being picked up and will do "drive-bys" where he'll rub against your legs affectionately. History: Cheeto has been a sweet and spicy treat while in his foster home. His foster mom thinks he would do great with agility or clicker training to keep him entertained and mentally stimulated. Cat/Dog Skills: This cheesy boy doesn't always get along well with others and would do best in a home with no other cats. Cheeto has no known history with dogs though, so we cannot say how he will react around them. Medical (If Applicable): Cheeto has moderate gingivitis (inflammation of the tissues around the teeth). These cats can benefit from daily brushing of the teeth to remove the plaque if they'll tolerate it and from regular dental cleaning of the teeth by a veterinarian. The adopting family should have this condition monitored by their family veterinarian. Ready to meet Cheeto? Personality: Cougar is a super affectionate, sweet, easy-going lovable cat who cannot get enough of you. His favorite thing to do is sit on your lap and give you hugs. As soon as you sit down, he will climb in your lap and purr. He is a great companion when you want to chill out and watch tv. One of his other favorite things to do is to give you head butts. History: Previously has been an indoor/outdoor cat however he must be an indoor-only cat in his next home due to a medical condition. Cat/Dog Skills: No known history around other cats.Medical: Cougar has tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) on a routine screening test. FIV-positive cats frequently appear healthy for many years and may live a full lifespan with proper veterinary and preventive care. FIV positive cats must be kept indoors to limit the potential spread of the virus. He was also treated for ruptured eardrum in his left ear secondary to an ear infection, his eardrum is in the process of healing and he is expected to do well. When Cougar arrived he presented with bleeding in the front part of his Right eye. His eye is looking better after treatment and the bleeding has stopped and is healing.
