About Basquiat

Basquiat
DSH, Brown Tabby
Medium, Adult

Special notes: Basquiat is one of the cats we have recently taken in from a semi-feral colony. He is sweeter than some of the other semi-ferals, but he is still a bit shy and would do best with a patient home that would give him time to socialize and adapt. He may also enjoy being allowed outdoors. He can coexist with other cats and at least some dogs. He may find children overwhelming.

"I may swat and hiss at first but the truth is, I just want love! I just don't always know how to accept it. But with enough patience, time, and gentle handling (with lots of treat reinforcement!), I have hope of being a good indoor kitty one day. I'm scared of new things and may start off well as an indoor/outdoor cat, and I may even be a great barn kitty for you by hunting around the premises. But I have a lot of love in me too that I would like to share, if I could find someone willing to help show me how to let it out."

Can't adopt Basquiat but want to help? He has a GoFundMe! He is one of the semi-feral cats we've rescued lately thanks to the help of the community here in Hancock County. https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/it-takes-a-village-help-spca-neuter-13-cats

Bella Shepherd mix, Golden tan brown Female, 3 years old Bella is a diamond in the ruff. She desperately needs a dog-savvy home that has the time, patience and ability to work with her to earn her trust. She snuggles fiercely, plays like a champ, is highly intelligent, loves other dogs, and is very trainable. She suffers with a few behavioral issues that stems from a tough start in life. The details are muddy, but her puppyhood was not great. Due to her poor start in life, her mistrust of people is warranted and she will need a dog savvy home with no small children and likely no men. Bella adores most other animals and would thrive with a confident doggy mentor sibling to teach her how to 'dog' within a home. Once Bella earns your trust and understanding, she will go to the ends of her world to please and put a smile on your face with her goofy playstyle and love of the water and toys. If you feel like investing time, love, and heaps of patience and training into this gorgeous pup- it will pay tenfold.  "My life has not been an easy one, and yet I still find ways to shoulder on through! When you first meet me, I may seem like 'that crazy dog'. The truth is, I'm just not sure how to say hello! I want to love people, but having been born a feral dog and then having a rough start in my puppyhood means I got a lot of mixed messages about people, so I need someone who is really in-tune with dog behavior and willing to help me sort through it all. Once you earn my trust and love, I am super affectionate, silly, and committed to you. "I love to play with toys and splash in water! I do get possessive over my things since I remember the days when I had to scrounge just to be alive. So it would be good if my future person knew about resource-guarding behaviors and was willing to work on that with a trainer with me. I get nervous and shy with introductions, and that's when I kind of act crazy, but I'm not actually aggressive toward other animals. Give me time to introduce slowly and nicely to them, and I love all critters. I really love playing with other dogs and would LOVE to have a big brother or sister to show me how to dog. "Shelter life has been hard on me, since I was born wild and free, and I've been here for a year now, but I'm starting to adapt and find ways to cope thanks to the humans continued efforts. The best thing for me would be to get into a home that knows how to handle difficult, somewhat wild dogs and integrate them, and then I would be in heaven and my real personality would flourish." Bella has been evaluated by a professional dog trainer to determine the course of her rehabilitation plan, as most of it has been outlined above. The dog trainer determined that Bella's future family needs to be very aware of her resource-guarding and aggression that comes from that, have a plan for introducing Bella to people, animals, and anything new, and be willing to commit to work with a trainer in the long-term to help Bella find ways to better introduce and present when meeting new situations and coping in a home life. If you're interested in Bella, please feel free to contact us through email or by calling us at 667-8088 from 11 am to 5 pm. PLEASE NOTE: During our adoption process, we will do a vet check on your current pets or previous pets from the past 10 years to make sure they've been up-to-date with rabies shots (required by law for dogs and cats) and vaccines. Botticelli DLH, Brown tabby and white Male, 2 years old Special notes: Botticelli came from a semi-feral cat colony, so he is not very sociable. However, Botticelli has been doing MUCH better and comes out to see humans when Marcel DuChomp, his "brother", comes out and shows him it's safe. Marcel is very confident unlike Botticelli, so we want to keep these two together so Botticelli can feel safe and improve his temperament.  “Meh, people! I don’t wanna deal with the likes of your kind! Although I guess the treats and tasty foods are nice … Okay, you’re not ALL bad, but don’t think I like you, okay? I gotta act tough because I’m a big, strong boy cat, so don’t listen to the stories from my handlers that I just hiss a little and then you can scruff me and pill me. They don’t know what they’re talking about. I've been showing them how tough I am lately by refusing to give any loves, even with Marcel going soft on the humans! Though I will admit... Marcel is very convincing... I've come out to sniff a hand or two just to see what Marcel is going on about." ”Okay, if I’m totally honest … I’m not a mean cat. It’s not like I want to pick a fight with anyone. I’m just scared and stuck on survival mode. But I won’t bite you like Marcel Du-Chomp will when he's angry. He’s like my brother. We come from the same place. I do fine with other cats, considering I’ve grown up in a cat colony, and I may even warm up a little to a special, patient person if they gave me enough time, treats, and love.” Can't adopt Botticelli but want to help him out? He’s actually got a GoFundMe going on if you want to give toward it. He’s one of the many semi-feral cats we’ve rescued lately thanks to the joined efforts of the community here in Hancock County. https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/it-takes-a-village-help-spca-neuter-13-cats If you would like to know more about Botticelli, please feel free to get in touch with us online or by calling us at 667-8088 from 11 am to 5 pm. Staffordshire terrier/lab mix, brindle coat Male, 7 years old. Medium weight (about 60 pounds) "Hi there! Some of you might recognize me from a few years ago. I went home for a while but acted out against a child, so my family decided I would be happier if I had another chance at a forever home. I’m a 7-year-old Staffie/Lab mix named Guinness, and I am looking for a family of my very own. I am a very affectionate boy who loves to play. I like to talk and will use my voice to say lots of different things. Guess you could say I’m pretty vocal. I am currently working on my manners and am making great progress. I am already house trained and know several commands. Some of my favorite things are playing with other dogs, going for walks, and giving affection to my humans. I have lived with children over the age of 12 and did very well with them. But I get picky and have nipped at the face of a child (no blood was drawn, so it's okay, right?) when they were annoying me, so I'm not really suitable for houses with young kids. I prefer to be handled gently and have been known to react if treated forcefully. I am looking forward to finding a new family who will show me kindness and love. If a loving, playful and handsome boy sounds like the furry family member you are looking for, I just may be the one for you. Can’t wait to meet you! Also according to some staff members who may or may not be named Katie, I don't like Katie's. It's nothing personal. It's just personal." Can't adopt Guinness but want to help him out? You can make a donation to help support the cost of his care today. We even offer affordable packages to sponsor a kennel. Visit our website spcahancockcounty.org/donate to learn more! show less

DLH, Orange and white Male, 3 years old Special notes: Hopper is one of the cats we recently took in from a semi-feral cat colony. He is not very socialized and would do best in a home that could give him space to adapt. He likes quiet voices and would prefer a gentle, safe house. He can coexist with other cats and at least some dogs. He may find children overwhelming. "I have been a very scared kitty! They call me Hopper because I want to hop on out of here! I did everything I could to get away from this shelter when I first arrived; I bolted, I hid, I pooped all over myself so I was a stinky mess no one wanted to touch.. but they cleaned me up and took care of me anyway, and then they gave me soft, gentle scratches behind my ears and said in a nice voice that I was going to be okay. That was actually pretty nice. I've been trying to settle down since then, but it's hard. I would be way happier if I could go to a nice, quiet home that would be really patient and nice with me and give me time to come out of my shell on my own, maybe with some treats to encourage me." DSH, Cream tabby Female, 11 years old Special qualities: diabetic (needs insulin), sweet and good with kids, doesn't like other cats “Why, hello! Don’t you want to let me out of this cage? I love walking around! I’m a super nice old girl. My family had to surrender me, but I haven’t let that get me down. I’ve been really friendly and good for the shelter staff as they give me my shots of insulin after my meals. I don't even flinch when they poke me with needles every day! I'm super good about taking my insulin. "I was even good-natured with a baby running up to my cage and sticking their baby hands in my face, so hey, perks, I'm good with little kids! “I do get hissy when I see other cats. I just haven’t been a fan of them. Maybe it’s because I’m old, maybe it’s because I’m sick, maybe I just don’t like cats, but it might be best for me to not go into a household with other cats. Or, in the very least, I’m going to need my own space away from those other cats. “You might notice my coat looks a little funny; that’s because I was shaved before I even came here! The shelter doesn’t know if it was because of mats or what, but yep, I have a cool little hairdo going on, something you don’t see so often with short haired cats. It makes my legs look like adorable long stockings, though! “So if you’re looking for a purrfect friend that has some special needs, I’m your girl! Please come by and meet me!” If you would like to know more about Jo, please feel free to get in touch with us through email at adoptions@spcahancockcounty.org or by calling us at 667-8088 from 11 am to 5 pm. Kandinsky DMH, Gray and white Male, 2 years old Special notes: Kandinsky came from a semi-feral cat colony, so he is not very sociable. He may do better as a barn cat. We define barn cats as cats that are not meant for lap cuddles and snuggles and may hiss and swat. They are often food-motivated and may enjoy going outside for hunting excursions or to lay in the sun. We require that our barn cats all have an indoor shelter to protect them from the elements, so please don’t think of them as “outdoor-only” cats. “What do you people want with us kitties, anyway? There we were, trying to create our own feral colony, and then a bunch of you showed up and decided you were going to ‘help’ us? I guess it’s not so bad, though. I mean, the meals are pretty good, and we don’t have to fight for places to sleep. Then the girls aren’t always having kittens, and I can think about more important things than girls, like where the best hiding spot is or if I want to maybe even accept some pets from a human. I’m not totally used to people yet and still timid with them, but I do accept some affection now and then and may even bonk my head in for some good rubs from time to time. I very well might open up and get used to you people with enough patience and love…” Kandinsky was on medication for two weeks for an upper respiratory infection but he is back, available, and healthy! Can't adopt Kandinsky but want to help him out? He’s actually got a GoFundMe going on if you want to give toward it. Bonded to Botticelli DLH, Orange and White Male, 8 months old "Fear me, if you dare! I am the best at what I do, but what I do best isn't very nice. I have proved myself a mighty boy, no, man many times by biting at the hands of puny humans who dare to try manhandle me. I was perfectly content until the humans came along. But ohhh, I guess you all aren't SO bad. Just the other day, I even enjoyed a glove-free petting from my handler. Just don't tell the other cats, okay? Gotta keep my tough guy rep... but my buddy Botticelli has seen my new ways and he even might be coming around too. I'm like his emotional support cat. I'm the brave one, and I show him things aren't so bad afterall." "Oh, but let's face it. I'm just a big pussycat. I am just a kitten still after all. You can see I've warmed up to the people here and do love on humans that win me over. I'm not really as feral as I played it up to be; I'm more of a tough guy with strangers, if anything. So if you're looking for a guard cat or bodyguard that will love you forever as long as you have yummy treats and know how to scratch behind my ears, well, I'm your man-cat." I was queen of a colony, slayer of 10,000 mice, eater of birds (but not their feet because ew, those are hard). I am not meant to be contained! From my first day here at the shelter, I let the humans know I am not a pussycat. When they tried to contain me, I made a bolt for it. They labeled me a ‘flight risk’. So when they tried to touch me, I would give them a good old nip, show them I could do more than just bare these fangs. They still wouldn’t give up! I don’t know what you beastly creatures want from me, but I don’t want any of it. Odin DSH, Black Male, 8 years old Special qualities: bonded to brother Oliver, must be adopted together! “Oh gosh, things sure have been scary lately. Just so many changes for us, but at least we have each other. We’re still pretty shaken up from coming to the shelter so our true personalities will take time to come out, but despite how moving around and ending up in a shelter is usually very scary, we’re nice boys. We like nice, gentle people who let us sniff their hands and then reach in and pet us. We might get more rowdy when we’re comfortable, but that will be saved for an update, we suppose! "But with time, patience, and really nice humans, we've come out of our shells at the shelter. Odin isn't so much of a nakey old man now that he isn't pulling out all his fur, and Oliver isn't always terrified of everyone and everything! We're still plenty young and spry, even though we technically are senior cats. Just watch Odin play with toys and see what we mean! Plus we like other cats. We just would love a nice, quiet home that is patient with letting us take our time and adjust, and then we can just relax and learn to be old man-cats. We have a lot of time to do that, we just need someone special to do it with." Can't adopt Odin and Oliver but want to support them? You can always make a donation toward their care! If you want to do even more, you can consider sponsoring a kennel for a year. DSH, Gray and white Female, 1~ year old "Admit it, I look like a darling little baby kitten, what with my tiny size and my big green eyes and that tiny button nose. But despite how people thought I was a baby at intake, they quickly figured I was older when they took a look at my mouth. And then I bit their fingers off - okay, not really, but I thought about it! My markings make it look like I'm either grinning or grimacing, and really, either expression suits! I'm full of purrsonality, packed full of it for a mere 6 pounds! Sometimes my caretakers forget I can't be older than a year because I already act like a crabby old lady cat. I'm just an old soul and very mature for my age. "Now, don't take all of that sass as a sign I must be a mean cat. Unless you're like a super-sensitive snowflake or something. I'm just kidding you. But anyway, I'm not a mean cat. I just know what I like and know when to say, hey, that's enough! Don't try to fool me with sweet talk, either. Patronizing me is only going to get you a smack to the face. Just ask Stacie! I keep it real around here. "I don't want to deal with the antics of other cats. It's probably other cats that gave me ringworm! Yup, when I first came here, I had the worst case of ringworm out of all the cats that were affected. It was horrible! I'll never forgive other cats for that ever, ever again. I may not do great with households with small kids either, since I don't have a lot of tolerance for stupidity. Not saying your kids are stupid, but I'm just saying ... Same goes for dogs. Those might be worse than kids. Maybe. "My purrfect life would probably be as a single cat, being pampered and tended to by a family that knows how to treat me right. But I'm open to negotiations." Can't adopt Olivia the sass-master but want to help her out? You can always make a donation to help support the cost of her care! We rely on donations to continue to provide medical care as well as shelter, food, and enrichment for animals like Olivia while they wait for forever homes.
