Adopted on 11/17/2022. Fleur is a Belgian Malinos/German Shepherd Dog mix puppy - about 14 weeks old. Fleur is a very sweet, astute puppy. She’s alert, observant and has a calm demeanor for a pup her age. She loves to snuggle with people and dogs. She plays hard with other young dogs and respects the elders. She takes gentle correction well and learns the first time. She likes to run away with the odd shoe, but that's just puppy behavior. She absolutely loves bones and toys and loves to play tug with her foster siblings. She sleeps where she likes and sometimes in the middle of the night she will want to crawl into bed with her people. Sometimes she will snuggle with dogs, and sometimes she may sleep on her own. She really doesn't like her crate but because she has been so good, has been loose in the house. She loves her doggie door and can be independent outside. She does dig which she learned it from her foster siblings. She is quite fearless but will read you before she decides you are safe to greet. She may sit and observe you for a quick few seconds before she approaches for pets. She loves to go in the car and would love an active family. She does great on leash and sticks close to her people. I’m a sweet and silly blank slate just chomping at the bit to learn. Of course I’m smart and am quite a good student too. In my foster home we’re working on the basics and getting used to indoor living. I’m actually pretty good on leash already and will surely be a lovely walking partner. I’m getting the hang of things quickly. I rode quietly in a crate to my foster home and am quickly learning the rules of the household. I do great in my crate during the night. I also easily allow all over handling; I don't mind my ears cleaned, my nails trimmed or even a bath. I’m very respectful with the resident dog and the parrot at my foster home. I met a cat today and didn’t try to chase. Did I mention I walk beautifully on leash? I’ll be super fun to train since I’m treat motivated and quite bright. I really love to use my nose so when I get a little older, I may enjoy scent work of some sort. I have medium energy for a girl my age. I'm very adaptable and easy going. Whatever you're doing, I will happily do right along with you-sitting out in the yard, going for a walk, taking a ride in the car...I'm totally game. I love to chill with my foster mom while she's working in her office. I'm very well mannered when I go out and about and I meet new friends calmly. I'll even wait patiently if we're out for a walk and you want to stop to chat with friends. If your friends have a dog or two, I'll greet them polietly too. My house manners are also terrific for a pup my age. Something you should know about me is that I learned to use the dog doors in about 5 seconds flat-yard to garage and garage to house...just like that! Actually my foster mom was trying to hide them from me but I figured them out anyway. My foster family says that I am a sweet, sweet girl. I love to snuggle and will climb up in your lap for a nap. She was found as a stray and BAGSR got her out of the shelter and into a foster home where she enjoys getting attention from her foster parents and she's having a lot of fun playing with her dog siblings. It takes a little bit of time for her to trust a new person but once she does she's very affectionate. She's housebroken and crate trained, and sleeps quietly in her crate all night. She's great in the car and she loves going on walks/hikes. Everything seems a bit new to her, so she still needs work on her leash skills when she's out and about, but she's getting a lot better every time, and she checks in with her handler when she needs some guidance. She met the resident cat, and although she seems workable with cats any potential adopters with cats should know that it will require some time and patience to make that work since she does find cats quite exciting. She's eager to please and loves food and treats, so positive reinforcement training would be great for her. She loves running and jumping so maybe agility training would be a good fit? Hi there — I’m Herbie, and if you’re looking for a sweet, affectionate, fun-loving guy with just the right amount of Malinois spirit… you might want to keep reading. 🐾 I’m 60 pounds of handsome, healthy goodness, and I’m basically in my young athlete discovering life is awesome phase. I absolutely love people — strangers included — and I’m always happy to say hello and lean in for affection. Honestly, being close to my humans is one of my favorite hobbies. I walk nicely on leash, ride great in the car, and I’ve done well in small playgroups. I haven’t shown any issues with smaller dogs so far, though I haven’t met cats yet. After being a bit sedentary for the last month or so, my stamina is still building back up, but I’m excited to get moving again and would love a person who wants a buddy for outings, training, and adventures. Now let’s talk about the important stuff: toys. Fetch? Eh… I’ll humor you. Frisbee? Okay, that’s more interesting. Tug? YES PLEASE. The first time I grabbed a tug toy, I took off shaking it like I had just won the championship. I love tug and really come alive during play. The flirt pole is my absolute jam — I get serious airtime and show off some impressive athletic moves. I also seem to think water fountains are personal splash zones, so water fun might be in my future too. I’m not a “go-go-go 24/7” kind of Malinois, but I do have drive and enthusiasm, especially when toys and training are involved. I learn quickly, I’m food motivated, and I genuinely enjoy working with my person. Because of that, I’d do best with an adopter who has experience with Malinois, German Shepherds, or similar working breeds — not necessarily a pro trainer, but someone who understands active, smart dogs and wants to continue guiding me. I can get a little jumpy and occasionally mouthy when excited (hey, I’m young!), so any home with kids would need thoughtful discussion and supervision while I keep learning my manners. I have a thick fluffy red and black coat, and I weigh about 75 lbs. I don’t actually know my exact age, but my vet says she thinks I’m about 5. Everyone says I’m handsome even though I’m pretty stocky, and I have kind of a short and stubby nose. I know from my pictures my eyes may look kind of sad to you, but believe me I’m really a very happy guy at heart! I’m just a lot more low key than most German Shepherds. So everyone who meets me says I’m just a “chill dude”, which is true! When I first came to my foster home, I was still pretty stressed out from the shelter. I also had some pretty bad seasonal allergies and a few other minor nasty health bugs. But thanks to my foster family and my vet getting me on the right medications, I’m feeling a lot better now. While I’m not a super active guy, I do like to play with people and other dogs. But because I’m used to being the top dog around, I get along much better with female dogs than males. So if you already have a younger (or older) female dog who needs a packmate, I could be your guy! But I would also be happy being an only dog for the right person. I’m not sure if I could live with a cat, but I have gotten along with some of the smaller dogs I’ve met with no problems. I haven’t had a lot of formal training, but I’m really good with basic stuff like come, sit down, and stay. And I don’t mean to brag, but I’m about as easy a dog as you’ll meet when it comes to walking on a leash. In fact, I really like getting out for a walk every day. I mean, I may be low key, but I’m not lazy! By the way, I’m also mostly housebroken and will let you know when I need to go out for a potty break. But it’s a good idea to let me out frequently after meals and naps so I don’t have an accident. Speaking of going out, I love being in the house with my people most of the time. But if you like hanging out in your yard sometimes, I’m there! I also really like riding in the car, even if it’s just going out running errands. Because I’m such a calm low key guy, you can pretty much take me with you out to any public place. I am fully crate trained and enjoy having my quiet private time there. My foster family even feeds me in my crate, which is pretty cool! I also like hanging out in the evenings on a dog bed if you’re relaxing or watching TV. And if you work from home, don’t be surprised if you find me snoozing under your desk during the day. That’s just because I like to be close to my people whenever I can! So if you’re looking for a big hearty guy who is handsome and smart, but also a super laid back dude, check me out. Adopted on 9/16/2022. Luca is a sweetheart! He's a handsome, (gets compliments from everyone) approx. 3 year old, black and red long coated fellow who loves attention from people. He's been good at ignoring the resident inside cat, showing almost no interest in her and hasn't shown any prey drive on the foster’s property. He also ignores the neighbor's goats when walking past their pasture, even when they run. Luca has also met some pretty mean chihuahuas and has been completely unresponsive to their bad attitudes. Luca listens well and has good manners. He knows to "get back”, “wait”, “sit” and “lay down". He rides quietly in cars too. He takes treats VERY gently and is pretty easy on leash with only an occasional need for a gentle reminder to walk nicely. Luca needs a calm home and surroundings. He's not a city dog and is uncomfortable around busy traffic noises. Luca will do best in a quieter setting and family home. Shopping and busy places are not his thing. He does love trails walks though. Luca needs a home with another confident, medium energy dog that will enjoy playing with him (tug and some gentle wrestling for a bit). He absolutely loves the companionship of another dog! He likes to play a bit with other dogs but he really loves his people. Hi! I’m Maddox — a handsome black beauty and a German Shepherd through and through. 🖤 Smart, curious, and just a little goofy when the mood strikes. I’m dog- and people-friendly, and I enjoy getting out and about. Car rides? Easy. I hop right in like a pro. On walks, I’m a gentleman on a front-clip harness (martingale = I might test my strength a bit 😄), and when we’re out exploring I love to sniff and take it all in. Traffic, doors, stairs, bridges, bikes, kids—none of it really rattles me. I’m a confident guy and not much phases me. It’s pretty clear I’ve been someone’s dog before. I know my basics, walk well, and listen nicely. In the field, I’ll come when called most of the time—which is impressive considering I’m still getting to know my people. I like playing ball and am happy to give it up so we can do it all over again. Chase is the fun part! I’m very treat-motivated (working on taking them more gently), know sit and down, and probably have a few more tricks up my sleeve. I’m super smart—food puzzles were no match for me—and I learn fast. Goats were interesting but not irresistible, and while I’m not sure how I feel about cats yet, kids at the playground didn’t bother me one bit. I can be a little cautious at first, but I warm up quickly. My favorite things are treats, training, and physical affection. I’m easy to handle, not a guarder, and can get adorably wiggly when I’m excited. When playtime starts, my silly side really comes out. I’m a typical young GSD: brainy, athletic, and ready for an active family who enjoys training and living life with a smart dog by their side. Adopted on 7/25/2022 Meet little Maddy. She just arrived at BAGSR and is settling in here in Santa Rosa. She’s a mal maybe mal mix and Swwwweeeeet as can be. She is desperate for attention but she isn’t clingy. She came from a very small holding facility that has 6 holding kennels and they are not open to the public. They hold dogs until they can be moved to a shelter - ANY shelter. This little one was headed to CCSPCA which is one scary place right now! She is very people and dog friendly. She is a little scared of other dogs but tries really hard. I picked about 2 dozen tiny ticks off her and she has some minor injuries to her face. She’s young, I would say just over a year, and has already had a litter. Her coat is dry and she needs some good nutrition. True to her breed, she is a bit mouthy but it’s gentle and she does jump up a bit but she’s very responsive to people so it spiny take too long to fix most of that. She walks well on a leash. We don’t know too much more at this point as we are just letting her decompress a bit. She will get spayed on the 11th and then to foster to heal and get ready for her new home. More info as we learn…..oh, she climbs trees!! 7/17/22 - I have been fostering Maddy for almost a week. Maddy is super engaging with people, good with all dogs she has met (on and off leash) and is good with kids. She melt right into people. Although she likes other dogs, people are her main focus and wants to be near them always. She learned my dog doors very quickly and goes outside to potty on her own. If she can't get out on her own and has to wait too long, she has pottied in the house, but that was my fault for leaving her too long. She is very quiet about telling you when she has to go out, but holds it as long as she can. She loves to lay on the sofa or a dog bed and is very calm when in the house. I walk her about 3 miles a day, which seems to be enough for her. We also play ball in the backyard a couple of times a day. I live by a lake and took her today with one of my dogs. I have been working on recall with her in my house and yard and she runs to me when I call for her. I let her off leash at the lake and she did great! I called her back to me frequenly and she came back to me just about immediately. We met at least 20 dogs of all sizes at the lake and she was great with each and every one of them. I have not seen any indication of fence jumping or tree climbing. I have not let her have access to the yard when I'm not home because she wants to be with her person so much, I'm afraid she may try to get to me when I leave. I have crated her upon me leaving and she did try to get out of the crate. I let her loose in the house with my dogs and she did take the dog door flaps off trying to get out. She does seem to have a bit of separate anxiety, but should go away once she feels secure. Until then, I suggest a sturdy crate. She eats really well and sleeps quietly all night in my room on a dog bed next to my bed. She walks well on a leash/harness with a little pulling at first. She has shown no dog or people reactvity. Maddy knows "sit" and we're working on "stay". Her recall is good, especially for being so new to me. She will jump up when she first sees you, but we've been working on that so she is much better. She is not treat motivated, but affection is so I've been using affection as her reward. She is very senstive and would not do well with someone who yells at her. She needs a patient owner that does not yell or uses aversive training methods. They will wreck this sensitive and sweet dog!! Maddy is a fantasic dog! She is adorable, smart, affectionate, good with dogs, people and kids. She needs an owner to build up her confidence and continue with training. She does not like to be away from her person, so it will take time for her to feel confident. She would do fine with another dog, but mainly she wants to be around people. She needs an active person that will make her a big part of their life. I love this little girl. She is a gem!! She is on antibiotics for a tick born infection. She can't get spayed until she is finished with her antibiotics which is 8/1/22. show less

Adopted on 7/25/2022 Milo is a sweet, friendly 5-6 month old GSD puppy. He's a very happy, easy going pup and loves to approach everyone for some attention. He's friendly with all people and all dogs. He's about 45 lbs and appears to be a healthy boy. He was a stray in Fresno and jumped into the finders car in a shopping center parking lot when it was 105 degrees out. Very happy to be in a cool spot. The finder, a friend of mine that does rescue in the area, checked in all the nearby stores and posted at local shelter and social media and pup was not claimed. He was not chipped and no collar. He was held for the appropriate time for strays in that area. I was asked if I would take him shortly after he was found and I agreed and he came in about 3 weeks later. He appears to be a purebred GSD. Coat was soft and full, he was clean and happy. Still had a baby canine next to the adult canine. He is a bit puppy jumpy but very easily corrected. He came on a flight from Fresno and when he got off the plane he just walked out on the wing and looked around, jumped down and came right to me. He was not bothered by all the noisy airplanes coming and going and allowed me to pick him up and put him in my car. He looked out the window the whole drive to the kennel and was not the least be fearful. We took a few drives/walks and he was great. He walked right in to Tractor Supply without a care about the doors, the floor, all the noise and commotion and immediately started saying hello to everyone that walked by. If someone stopped to pet him, he just snuggled into them for pets. Very nice puppy! show less

Adopter 10/20/2022. Meet Mister Mister is a very affectionate dog who at one time had a very nice owner who trained him well. Unfortunately, he is afraid of abandonment and suffers from separation anxiety. He enjoys playing fetch at least when it's not too hot. He really enjoys being brushed and does not mind having his nails clipped. He loves chasing squirrels and could watch them for hours and sometimes he does. He's great with small and big dogs as long as they're neutered. He does not appreciate unneutered males. He has a very good bark and will let you know if anybody gets near the front door or your fence. Unfortunately, he can also jump your fence. Once he gets used to being somewhere though he doesn't seem to want to jump the fence anymore he just wants to be wanted by someone. He is currently on medication for the separation anxiety but that only cost about $6 per month. He takes it very nicely in a pill pocket that I just toss in his food bowl. Hi there! I’m Jack. I'm on the small side for a German Shepherd Dog but I have a giant personality. Everyone says whoever adopts me is going to fall head-over-heels in love, and honestly…it's true! I’m a busy little guy who loves zooming around and playing with the other dogs. I’ve already mastered the doggie door for potty time which is pretty impressive I think! My foster mom takes me out often though to make sure I stay on track with house breaking. At night, I like to wiggle my way up for a snuggle halfway through — I can’t help it, I’m a cuddle bug. I’m also one brave puppy! Sprinklers? Steam mop? Vacuums of all sizes? Pshhh. I laugh in the face of cleaning tools. Nothing scares me. And if I want something, I’ll tell you with my adorable puppy voice. I'm definately a talker. I love chewing my toys, turkey tendons, and my deer antler — I chew like a big dog trapped in a small body! I’m not destructive, but I am a curious noodle and might pull interesting things off tables just to see what they are (especially if they smell yummy). I’ve got great recall though, I’m super smart, and I take corrections like a champ — even when the gentle foster dogs give me one. I’m joyful, silly, sweet, and full of puppy love. Hi! I’m Lissa — a sweet, curious little girl ready to start my real life. 🐾 I’m about six months old, which means I’m right at that wonderful age where everything in the world feels new and exciting. Honestly, I’m still figuring a lot of things out. My foster family thinks I may not have had much experience out and about before, so I’m learning what leashes, walks, and everyday adventures are all about. New sights, sounds, and loud noises can make me a little unsure at first, but I bounce back quickly. Once I realize I’m safe, my curiosity takes over and I’m ready to keep exploring. I just need someone patient to help me discover how fun life can be. I do great with other dogs — big ones, small ones, all of them! Having a confident dog friend could really help show me the ropes. Think of me as a blank slate, just waiting for someone to teach me how wonderful it is to be a loved family dog. Because I’m still quite young, I’ll do best with adopters who have some puppy experience and understand how important this stage of life is. I need gentle exposure to the world — meeting new people, going new places, and learning that everything isn’t so scary. Slow and steady wins the race with me.
