Young miss Lucy, at 9 months old, is finally getting to relax and enjoy life after being rescued with her brother and mom from a high-kill shelter. In her foster home, where she is happy to cuddle with their 5-year-old little boy and play with her foster doggie brother, Lucy is putting her past behind her. As her rescuers and foster mom all note, Lucy has the heart of a lion - but now has shown she has the soul of a frolicking lamb. While in the shelter this pup took on the role of guarding their pen to protect her brother and mom with growls at people who she was worried would harm them. That brave, bluffing behavior is in her past now. She has blossomed into a gentle, loving girl and is enjoying her puppyhood with the weight of that duty lifted. Lucy, a border collie/cattle dog mix, with large alert ears and a short black and white-dappled coat, is currently about 19 lbs. and should grow up to be around 22-25 lbs. She is house trained and has behaved well on both leashed and unleashed walks. While she has lots of energy, Lucy likes to stick close to her person and returns with just a call of her name. She is good with people and gets along well with the other household dogs and cat where she is living. Lucy’s sweet nature is definitely displayed when kids come over to play at her foster home. She lets little boys and girls tussle with her, take toys from her mouth, lift her up and has never shown anything but a tolerant, fun-loving nature playing with them all. Lucy can sleep on her own bed now, but the lucky girl lately enjoys sleeping on the bed snuggled next to her foster mom at night. Maybe she can get her own home to snuggle in with you? Our little Wallace seems to get a smile from every person who sees his ever-wagging tail, happy-to-meetcha greeting, and the obvious intelligent curiosity in his dark, almond-shaped eyes. Wallace is a rust-colored Cairn terrier mix - low shedding - who loves to play and go on daily walks. That can be with his person, family or other dogs, such as the two he is currently living with and just adores. Wallace is also imaginative and self-confident and can entertain himself at home with any doggy toy. His foster mom says she laughs watching this cutie as he throws his toys in the air. Just about a year old, Wallace is as silly as a puppy, but he's full grown, so he will always be a little guy at only about 10 lbs. That makes him easy to travel with, and he's a great companion on outings. He has behaved beautifully in a grocery cart seat at Home Goods and dining out at a dog-friendly restaurant. He's calm and happy when you pick him up so it's simple to give him all the snuggles, baby hugs and belly rubs he enjoys. His foster mom says loves to be your shadow around the house, and nestles calmly into your lap for couch or bed-time lovin'. Wallace is house and crate trained, and is a pretty quiet guy. He uses a doggy door where he's living now, lets his parent know when he has to go do his business, and sleeps the night through in his crate without a peep. He's smart and intuitive, and has already learned the sit, come and off commands. He will need your help in training him to curb his curious nature so he learns not to take and inspect the interesting things you have. He and his brother were both rescues from a high-kill shelter, and we are baffled why the two were on the last chance list. Now Wallace needs some person or family to keep entertained and to share his abundant love. He might just melt your heart. To meet Wallace, fill out an adoption application today at show less

Our unique and beautiful Piper was on her last day at San Bernardino County when we pulled her. It is unfathomable to us that she was passed by. Piper was named after the planes, for her propeller-shaped ears. They aren't quite husky ears, and not quite shepherd ears. They are cute though! Her real charm lies in her personality and her gentle demeanor though. Piper is an old soul--she is only 1 year old, but she has a certain calm and regalness about her that will only get better with age. She's not totally serious though--she has a little twinkle in her beautiful blues eyes that let you know she has a little fun, mischief, and smarts mixed in there too. Piper is lithe and sporty, and loves a good long walk. She would be a great companion for hikes, runs, and walks. She will enjoy following any sort of activity with a quiet moment at home. She is very people oriented, and will pretty much just enjoy being wherever her people are. She is also very smart and learns quickly. Training with Piper will be easy and fun. Piper gets along well with other dogs, and is housetrained. She is crate trained too, but prefers to be close to her humans for sleep time. She is a stealth snuggler, and has been caught sneaking into the beds of her human foster siblings around bedtime. She is great in the house, and also gets along great with children. She would do well as either a second dog in the home or an only dog, as long as she gets some love and attention from her humans. Piper is full grown at a lean and lanky 40-45 pounds. (She could probably gain a few more pounds, but she will not get any taller.) Are you looking for a mellow, lovely friend to accompany you on your life adventures? Visit TRD's website (http://therescueddog.org/available-dogs/dog-adoption-application/) and fill out an application to meet Piper. show less

Our adorable boxer-mastiff mix Eggs and his equally lovable brother Bacon were nabbed by The Rescued Dog in San Bernardino--their "owner" tried to sell them and their littermates in the parking lot of the San Bernardino pound before turning them in. The owner managed to sell Bacon's and Egg's siblings but our poor little bite-sized nom noms were left behind. We scooped them up and brought these two darlings to San Diego. When TRD got them back home, we discovered that they both had hematomas in their ears, probably from shaking them because of infections or irritations. Even with these painful conditions, Bacon and Eggs bounced back with a little TLC in true puppy form. They have been silly and rambunctious from day one. Their infections have totally cleared up and they are healthy and happy little guys! Spunky and fun, Bacon and Eggs have been stealing hearts left and right. They are both athletic and affectionate, and love other dogs and every person they meet. At four months old as of October 2014, Bacon and Eggs are a great age to start puppy classes and basic training. Bacon and Eggs are very smart and have taken to crate training very well. They have also also caught on to some basic training and would love to continue learning with their forever families. Bacon and Eggs are boxer-mastiff mixes, and weigh around 25 pounds at 4 months. We estimate that Bacon and Eggs could weigh as much as 80 pounds full grown. These guys do not have to be adopted together (but how fun would that be?) Are you looking for a fun and affectionate companion to join your family? Visit TRD's website and fill out an adoption application to meet Bacon and Eggs! http://therescueddog.org/available-dogs/dog-adoption-application/ show less

Smart, friendly, and active only begin to describe our dreamboat Falcon! Falcon is approximately 8 months old and should grow up to be about 40lbs. This stunning cattle dog/border collie mix has all the brains associated with his heritage, and all the energy! Falcon came to us from a shelter in the San Bernardino area where he was picked up as a stray with his sister (who was rescued by another group). When we got him, he was covered in ticks and had recently been sprayed by a skunk. As our vet tech said, he must have had quite an adventure! Falcon gets along great with everyone he meets including dogs and children. When he meets new people he can hardly contain himself and is quick to roll over for belly rubs. He also loves to snuggle on the couch with his foster family after a nice walk. Falcon plays nicely with other dogs and is great at settling down in the house. Falcon is working on crate training, basic obedience, and walking nicely on a leash. He's also learning to ask to be let out to potty and (knock on wood!) hasn't had any accidents in the house. By all accounts he's a model citizen who's just lacking in some basic manners, much like any puppy! If you're looking for a spunky, quick learning, affectionate and active dog, Falcon is for you! show less

Are you looking for a happy and easy-going friend to join you on walks, runs, and hikes? Meet Marty, our sweet and social shepherd mix. Marty came to us from Moreno Valley, where he was at risk for euthanasia. It's possible that Marty's calm, somewhat shy demeanor worked against him in the shelter environment. He doesn't cause a fuss and is so low maintenance that he probably didn't grab much attention there. He's got our attention now though! Marty is an exceptionally handsome young pup, with a beautiful brindle short coat and kind eyes - we aren't certain of his primary breed, but its either shepherd or a Carolina dingo. Marty has a charming way about him, energetic, spirited, motivated to please, with an optimistic nature. An interesting note, we haven't seen or heard him bark, but he has the sweetest singing vocal sounds he makes when he's happy and excited. This sweet boy has come out of his shell and it turns out he is a great companion dog who lives with other dogs currently, he is potty and crate trained, know basic commands, is non-aggressive and loves to play with toys. Talk about perfect! Marty is great on the leash (it's easy to forget he's there because he's so undemanding!) and very non-reactive to other dogs when he's out and about. He's fun to bring to the park or the beach and has great recall. Marty is a little over 1 year old as of October 2014, which is a great age to reinforce the training he has and teach him some new tricks; with his cattle-dog traits, he is a fast learner and very observant. Marty is full grown at about 35 pounds. If you think this sweet, talented and teachable charmer is for you, visit our website at www.TheRescuedDog.org and fill out an application to meet Marty! show less

Hero and her ~2 week old litter came to us from San Bernardino City Animal Control. The original owners were over their city dog limit and were forced to surrender the chihuahua family. Unfortunately, the original owners did not leave the mother’s name, age, or even the date when the puppies were born. Having been surrendered to a kill shelter with teeny tiny babies to care for, we could only come up for one name for our chihuahua mother, Hero and a Hero she has been! For the past 7 weeks, the Hero family has been well socialized with people, especially kids. The neighborhood kids come over daily to visit and play with the puppies. At 12 weeks old, the puppies range between 2-5 lbs and we expect these chihuahua/beagle mixes (best guess) to end up at no more than 20lbs, the perfect size for any home! Momma Hero is smart, playful. and very friendly, giving these pups a great role model as they grow. While each pup has it's own distinct personality, the whole litter is curious, friendly, sweet and ADORABLE! All puppies are spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped - their adoption fee is $350. Beatrice is one unique girl with her brindle coat, adorable head shape, and light green eyes, an all around show stopper! Everyone asks what we think Beatrice is mixed with, and we just can’t tell right now! Her foster family states that Beatrice is smart, fearless, and has been the first puppy to do everything. Beatrice was the first to transition to puppy food, play with toys, adventure outside on her own, etc. Bruiser Bea, as her foster family has nicknamed her, isn’t afraid to wrestle with her brothers or get dirty. Sweet Bea would be an easy addition to your family, she is coming along in her potty training and is not a big barker. She loves all dogs, big and small and can happily romp around and play with most anything she can find. This little tom girl also has a sweet side to round out her character. It's not often that we can boast having such a perfect everywhere-dog in our ranks of adoptables! Little Miss Eos is the complete package: roughly 30lbs, active, very social, and full of personality. She's up for anything and ready for action. This spunky girl loves the beach, running next to the bike, spending time with some canine friends, and snuggling on the couch. She loves floppy toys and we just can't stop watching her chase them around with her unique prancing gait! Eos loves the company of other dogs and would thrive in a home with nearly any canine companion or regular trips to the dog park. Eos came to us as a stray who was picked up in very rough shape. Her patchy coat, visible ribs, and overgrown nails are a thing of the past now; after a few weeks of high-quality food and TLC her fur has regrown into a surprisingly soft low-maintenance coat and she's evened out at a perfect 30lbs. While in her foster home, Eos is working on crate training, basic obedience, reliable potty training (she's almost there!), and confidence building while meeting new people. She can be initially shy of an unfamiliar person, but she's warms up quickly and every new meeting is a little less reserved than the last. When our Volunteer Coordinator saw a photo of LT in the shelter, she knew she had to save her - LT ("Little Thea") looks like a mini version of our Volunteer Coordinator's own dog, Thea! Our sweet petite LT weighs in at about 30 lbs and at 1 year old, she is fully grown though she will fill out a little. LT has been such a great dog in her foster home - she knows commands sit, wait, down and is housetrained, gets along with the other dogs, does well at the dog park, loves to interact with every person she meets, plays appropriately, is relaxed in the evenings, does not bark very much, takes treats gently... the list could go on! LT can be on the shy side when you first meet her, but she warms up quickly and wants nothing more than to please her people. LT is great on a leash and would make a great walking/running partner. LT is an easy to train pup that responds to gentle coaxing and is responsive to praise, affection and love - she is a perfect family pup. She has been caught snuggling with a few pieces of clean laundry, and she knows the difference between toys and clothes - she loves her stuffed animals! LT makes weekly trips to the dog park and has a blast - this girl is just fantastic! If you'd like to meet LT, please fill out and Adoption Application. show less
