Sam's story starts out in a sad way - her owners adopted her from a shelter when she was a puppy and had her as a family member for about 3 years. But when it came time to find a new place to live, the owners weren't able to find a pet-friendly place so they decided to take Sam to the shelter. Now it's time to find Sam's true forever home! This gentle giant is a fun, goofy, sweet, and loving girl! Sam is a large girl at around 72lbs and has a sleek but sturdy frame. She gets along great with her foster brothers and doesn't seem to really have an opinion on other dogs during her daily walks. Her smallest foster brother started to play with her one night and in order for him to have an even playing field, he jumped up on the couch and Sam adjusted her play style to match his - talk about adorable!! Sam spent a couple days at dog day care recently and won the hearts of the staff and other dogs - she can be quite the charmer ;) She can be easily startled by loud sounds or quick movements, but is quickly learning to trust her humans for guidance. Sam has clearly had some training in the past as she knows "sit," "down," and "shake." She's also housebroken and crate-trained - she's the complete package! Between her incredibly soft fur and her adorable underbite, Sam is sure to win the hearts of everyone she meets. Although our little Penelope is a puppy, she is something of an old soul. If her first few weeks with us are any indication, Penelope is going to be a great mellow family dog. It's not that she doesn't have puppy spunk--she does! She loves to play with other dogs (or entertain herself if none of her canine pals are available) and her antics will leave you laughing. She balances her more typical puppy behaviors with amazing smarts. At just a couple of months old as of June 2014, she is already housebroken and knows where he bed is, and what stuff should be played with and what should be left alone. Penelope currently lives in a foster home with several other dogs of all shapes and sizes, and gets along great with everyone. At a recent TRD event, Penelope stole the show, socializing with other dogs and spreading the love with kids and adults alike. She is confident without being overbearing, and sweet and affectionate but not needy. And let's face it: she's ADORABLE! She's got a great unique look with her long nose and great black and white markings. She's going to have the good looks to match her great personality, no doubt about it! It's always a little hard to say this early (Penelope is estimated to be 3 months old as of June 1st), but we think she will be on the petite side, maybe maxing out at 50 pounds. She currently weighs about 15 pounds. Are you looking for a sweet, easy-going puppy to join your family? Fill out an Adoption Application today to meet Penelope! show less

When we pulled Rockie from the San Bernardino County shelter, he had a mass the size of a softball growing under his chin. We weren't sure what it was, and it didn't look good, but we knew we had to take a chance on this handsome guy. We were told that he had either an infected or blocked salivary gland and that surgery may be necessary. Thankfully, it has turned out that a strong dose of antibiotics has shrunk the mass down from a softball to golfball, and it looks like Rockie will be making a full recovery without surgical intervention. We suspect that once the mass started growing, his former owners were intimidated by the potential care Rockie would require and so they relinquished him to the shelter. It is too bad, because clearly they put some time and effort into training Rockie. He is solid on his sit, down, and stay commands, and he appears to be completely potty trained. He is also loving and affectionate, and very people oriented. Rockie is a purebred boxer, and is about as good looking as they come. We estimate that he will be 55 to 65 pounds full grown. At 6 months old as of mid-May, he weighs in at 35 pounds. Rockie has a nice mellow demeanor, which is somewhat surprising for a puppy, especially a boxer puppy. We're not complaining! This mellow guy is on his way to having a great, easy-going demeanor as an adult. With basic training already under his belt, Rockie is going to fit in easily in almost any living situation. Are you looking for a handsome, well-behaved pup to join your family? Fill out an application at http://therescueddog.org/available-dogs/dog-adoption-application/ to meet Rockie! show less

Ranger's story is a little unbelievable: he was left in the backyard of a house in San Bernardino that was burning down. After he was rescued, efforts were made to contact his family but they did not respond. He was brought into San Bernardino's Devore shelter and put up for adoption. Once the TRD crew caught sight of this handsome guy, we knew he was one of ours and we snatched him up! Ranger is 10 months old as of mid-May and weighs about 35 pounds. He may put on a few more pounds before he is fully grown. Ranger displays all of the great qualities of Australian cattle dogs. He is intelligent, energetic, and responsive to humans. He is currently in a foster home with 2 other dogs, including another cattle dog, and he is very social with them. He also loves his human fosters, and has proven to be snuggly and affectionate with his people. Ranger is also house trained and crate trained. As a young dog and as a cattle dog in particular, Ranger will thrive with someone who will focus on his training and and give him plenty of exercise. He would excel at agility, and would love that kind of challenge. The Rescued Dog would prefer to adopt Ranger out to someone with experience with the Australian cattle dog breed, but we will definitely consider an adopter who has an active lifestyle that matches Ranger's needs even if you are new to the breed. Our sweet baby Blanca is a beautiful white shepherd mix. As you can see from her photos, she has a goofy, fun-loving personality and a lot of spunk! Blanca's foster family reports that she is very smart, and has picked up both crate training and potty training very quickly. She also has enjoyed learning her basic commands and would love learning new commands. Blanca currently lives with a 3-year-old male basset/pit mix, and they get along great. She has more puppy energy than her foster brother, but she seems to do a good job of respecting his boundaries and winding down when he's had enough. At about 6 months old as of mid-May, Blanca is at a great age for her new family to bond with her and show her the ropes. She will take really well to training, and will be a lot of fun to work with. And, of course, she will make a great companion. Blanca is sweet and affectionate and thrives on human companionship. Blanca currently weighs about 30 pounds and given her petite frame, we expect her to be in the 50-60 pound range when she is full grown. Are you looking for a fun and friendly girl to join you on walks, hikes, and other fun adventures? Brains, beauty, and personality to boot! Azuki has it all! This tall, lanky girl is absolutely incredible - her foster mom reports she has not had one accident in the house since she arrived, her personality is coming out more and more everyday, and she's learning her basic commands. She's just about 55lbs right now, but should be about 60-63lbs once she's filled out. Azuki was pretty scared of the outside world at first, but a few days in her foster home has proven invaluable. She plays with the two other dogs in the house beautifully and has started coming up to her human fosters for attention. Azuki is such a gentle soul and wants nothing more than to please her human. She can be a little shy when first meeting new people, but she warms up quickly and her happy tail wags prove she's just elated to be out of the shelter! Because she is housetrained, crate trained, and overall a very quiet pooch, Azuki will make an excellent companion to just about anyone! She turns heads everywhere she goes with her gorgeous light brindle coat and dark black eyeliner - she's definitely a show stopper :) If you'd like to meet Azuki to see just how amazing she truly is, please fill out an Adoption Application today at http://therescueddog.org/available-dogs/dog-adoption-application/. show less

Cadence is ready to steal your heart! This petite beauty was rescued from San Bernardino with minutes to spare. She came in to San Bernardino as a stray and it is unbelievable to us that anyone would let this sweetie go. Cadence gets along well with dogs of all shapes and sizes, adores her family, and is ofter found cuddling with her foster brother - a 70lb boxer. She's a little slow to warm up to strangers, but within a couple minutes she feels comfortable in their presence and becomes affectionate with them. Cadence has bonded strongly with her foster family and is very loyal to them. Cadence is sporty but not high energy, which means she's ready to join you for a walk, run, or hike, but also ready for a good snuggle on the couch. Cadence is about 3 years old and is currently 29 pounds, and will likely gain another pound or two while in our care. It appears Cadence has had quite a few litters in her short life, but we promised her she would never have to go through that again and she is now happily spayed. She is a great size for almost any living situation and her calm demeanor would make her ideal for first time adopters, someone looking for a second dog, or anyone who would appreciate a mellow and beautiful family dog. Cadence is very petite for a husky and is likely a Alaskan Klee Kai mix, or she is just a teeny-tiny husky! Our handsome gentleman Geno was taken in by animal control in San Bernardino as part of a hoarding case. The Rescued Dog saw Geno's potential under his awful assortment of dreadlocks, fleas, and dirt, and stepped in to rescue him and bring him to San Diego. It is hard to believe that Geno had such a rough start because he is so sweet and even keeled. Initially he stayed with a temporary foster who has 3 large dogs, and Geno loved the company. Geno is currently with a foster home that includes a canine buddy closer to his size as well as cat, and he gets along swimmingly with them both. Geno is also a lover of his people, and his foster parents report that he is affectionate and easy-going. Unfortunately for Geno, a short time after settling into his foster home, he broke his leg running down the stairs. A lifetime of poor nutrition and little exercise had left him weak. Geno's broken bone was surgically repaired, and he has been on a healthy diet since being under TRD's care. His bone has healed completely, and he is starting to get the exercise he needs to bound around like he wants to! As long as Geno gets the nutrition and exercise he needs, he will suffer no long-term effects from his injury. Geno is really a gem of a dog. Smart, sweet, affectionate, and easy-going, Geno is ready for his forever home. He is potty-trained, crate-trained, and knows basic commands. Geno is one year old and weighs in at around 12-15 pounds. If you think Geno could be for you, please fill out our application (http://therescueddog.org/adopt/adoption-application/). show less
