Meet Jax. Now, cue the Batman song. Nah, nah, nah, nah, Jax Man! He is a silly boy who is prone to looking like a fruit bat with his large pointy ears and pearly white fangs. Jax is about 2-3 years old. He was brought into the rescue from a shelter a little over 3 months ago. He was very underweight, had swollen feet, was full of foxtails, and his skin was infected. Please note: We are a small rescue and do not have the resources to respond to inquiries. If a dog is on our website, it is still available. We can not arrange meet & greet without an application. We are not a shelter and do not have a facility. All our dogs are in foster homes. Adoption Fees: Puppies and dogs up to 2 years old: $450 Dogs over 2 and under 6 years old: $400 Dogs 6 or more years old: $350 Please follow Calpaws K9 rescue on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/CalpawsK9Rescue) for updates on our dogs. He also has a previously healed fracture on his back leg. This doesn’t slow him down much, but he can occasionally limp. Over the course of the past 3 months, he has had over 100 foxtails removed from his feet and body. His skin has been slowly healing from open wounds and infections. He is now a healthy weight, most of his fur is growing back, and he has been foxtail free. However, he was also diagnosed a heartworm positive and now that he is doing so well, it is time to start treatment for those nasty worms. This will be done over the course of about another 3 months and during that time, he will have to be kept quiet and not overexert his heart as the treatments are quite rough. Despite all of the above, Jax is a super silly, super sweet boy. He is good with dogs and dog savvy cats. He hasn’t been around a lot of small children or small dogs, but he hasn’t been inappropriate during brief meets. He is rarely reactive to much while on walks or while hanging out in the front yard off leash. He has demonstrated a good recall when commanded or will stop immediately if told. He really just wants to be with people. He will chose people over dogs. He recently started daycare and has done well. He plays some and enjoys the other dogs, but prefers to follow the room attendant around. He is not a snuggly dog and sometimes gets up and moves if he just isn’t feeling the love. But other times, he enjoys a nice hug or a belly rub. Some of this could be a result of being painful to touch for so long. He will follow you everywhere or make sure you are in his sight. He does suffer from separation anxiety and is best crated when leaving him even for short periods. His is currently in an Impact Crate, but he will be working on going into a plastic crate and not escaping. When left out of the crate while his people are gone, he has chased the cats or peed in the house due to his anxiety. He has not demonstrated any other destructive behavior. He has been working on his manners. He has a nice sit now and will sit and wait for his food. He is learning “leave it” and “take it” and has done well. He takes treats gently when instructed. Like most Shepards, he can be a bit mouthy at times. He is potty trained but still has occasional episodes of peeing in the house. It seems if he gets the urge to pee and no one is paying attention, he will find a place in the house. He might do better if there is a doggy door available. Jax would do well in a home with someone who is retired or works from home to be his constant companion. He enjoys other animals in the home but they are not a source of comfort to him like a human. He hasn’t met a person he didn’t like yet and aims to please. He likes car rides, coffee dates, and walks. He has bursts of energy and gets zoomies and loves a good tough squeaky toy he can gnaw on, but he is most often happy to lay around and keep an eye on things. He is a quiet, handsome dude and not much phases him. Consider adopting Jax and in return you’ll get a constant loyal companion.
