Cupid (aka Major)  Our Blue-Eyed Heartbreaker    Cupid’s journey began on December 4, 2024, when he came to CalPaws K9 Rescue at just hours old umbilical cord still attached and in desperate need of saving. Alongside his littermates, lovingly called “The Love Litter,” Cupid thrived with the help of his foster family and was adopted into what we hoped would be his forever home this past February.   Yesterday, we were contacted by his adopter with heartbreaking news their family dynamics have changed, and they no longer feel they can give this precious boy the life he deserves.  While we work hard to find the perfect fit for every CalPaws dog, sometimes life changes in ways no one can predict. But our promise stands: once a CalPaws dog, always a CalPaws dog. Cupid is coming back to us, and we’re determined to find him the perfect forever home.   Cupid, now called Major, has always been a strikingly handsome boy. He’s about 90% German Shepherd, with just a tiny sprinkle of Husky that gifted him the most stunning blue eyes. His DNA even revealed that his mom came from a breeder in the North Midwest so he’s got some impressive roots!   At just 9 months old, Cupid is already a big, strong guy and still has a little growing to do. Beyond his good looks, he’s a sweet, smart, and loving companion who wants nothing more than to make his people proud.   Cupid is ready for a fresh start with a family who will cherish him forever. If you’ve been dreaming of a loyal, loving, and stunning companion, this boy could be your perfect match. show less

Meet Sweetie, the sweet and gentle German shepherd mix. Sweetie is a lovable German Shepherd mix who has overcome a rough start and is now ready to find her forever home. Found as a stray at a park in Fresno, Sweetie endured a week of harsh weather—rain and hail—before being rescued by a kind-hearted person and their resident dog. Since then, Sweetie has blossomed into a friendly, gentle, and well-behaved companion. Though a little timid at first with both people and other dogs, Sweetie warms up quickly and soon shows her sweet, affectionate nature. She’s been a perfect guest in her foster home, where she’s demonstrated her intelligence and good manners. Sweetie is house-trained, doesn’t chew, and is not destructive. She enjoys laying quietly by her foster mom, who works from home, and is content to relax by her side. Sweetie is an alert dog and will let you know if something's going on, but her alarm barking is appropriate and not excessive. While she may howl a few times when left alone, she soon settles down. She’s also an excellent walker, does not pull on the leash, and always comes when called. Plus, Sweetie is cat-friendly, making her an ideal match for households with feline companions. This sweet girl is ready to join a loving family and would fit perfectly into many homes. If you're looking for a calm, affectionate companion who’s ready to shower you with love and loyalty, Sweetie may be the perfect fit! show less

Puppies can be a lot especially when they are a breed you’ve never owned before. Educating yourself about the breed before jumping into a puppy is critical, but you never really know until you’re knee deep in puppy craziness. Just like you never really know someone until you lived with them. This sweet puppy, now named Mika, has a story that starts just like that. She’s a beautiful, powerful breed purchased from a backyard breeder who claimed it was just an “accidental litter.” (When is it ever an accidental litter when you have an intact male and female on the property?) A family with a small child found the litter and decided to purchase a “beautiful puppy.” The toddler in the home was said to be “tormenting” the puppy, so the family was forced to keep them separated. Mika ended up spending much of her time in the laundry room, which led to a lack of socialization. An XL breed that is unsocialized even as a puppy is never a good thing. Caucasian Shepherds are a guardian breed. They have strong protective instincts and a territorial nature. They thrive when they have a job and a strong, experienced handler to guide their training. Breed experience is a must. Mika was later posted on social media as a giveaway. Someone sent us the post asking if we could help. We were concerned this puppy would end up in the wrong hands again, with someone unfamiliar with the breed, so we agreed to step in. Her former owners have been dedicated to doing what they can to support her and to make sure she ended up in the right hands. We’ve kept them updated throughout. They even drove her 4 hours (each way) to meet the transporter, who then drove her another 5 hours to her foster home. This big puppy is now a Tesla pro! When Mika arrived at her foster home, the effects of being locked away were clear. She was unconfident, scared, and defensive. But after some decompression and training, she’s starting to come around and learning that people and four-legged friends are okay. As we continue to work with her, we’re looking for her perfect home. Someone with breed experience is essential. Mika is currently 13 weeks old and weighs 24 pounds. Her parents were 160 and 200 pounds. While she likely won’t reach that size, she will still grow into an XXL breed. show less
