Athena is an older GSD that has had some rough breaks at a time in her life when she should be enjoying her senior years. She is approximately 9 years old and is a large girl. With information gathered from people who knew the family that owned Athena, she was with them most of her life. But, this year they moved away and abandoned her and a smaller dog in the backyard. Fortunately, someone became aware of the situation and provided food and water to the dogs regularly. The smaller dog was placed into rescue, but with GSD rescues being so full, Athena wasn’t so lucky. The man who was feeding her had decided he would keep Athena, but before he could take her home, he tragically died. After some time in a boarding kennel, Athena finally made it into a rescue foster home!!! Needless to say, Athena had some trust issues, some separation anxiety and needed some medical care. Fast forward to being in a foster home for 6 weeks. Athena lives with 2 male GSD’s, a female GSD, a pot belly pig, chickens and a horse. She does the occasional bark greeting to the horse in the morning at feed time, but otherwise she seems to love the menagerie. After about 3 weeks in her foster home, she understood the daily routine and her separation anxiety was no longer an issue. She began to feel safe and secure and her playful side came out. She loves a Chuck it ball---to chase, to chew, to carry. She also loves a daily soak in a plastic kiddie pool (as it is still quite warm where she is being fostered). Athena has learned to trot alongside the bicycle, she also loves to walk and is currently being walked on a martingale collar. She is learning to have her nails clipped. She is crate trained and currently still loves to sleep in her crate. She has never had an accident in the house. She loves to go for car rides as well. Sometimes Athena bursts out in little sprints, where she seems much younger than her actual age. She was overweight when she arrived at her foster home, but she has now lost weight and is lighter on her feet. She has great mobility. Athena would be a wonderful companion dog. She will be fine with other dogs. She might be cat workable. Due to her size and strength, she should not go into a home with young children. She will most likely need a good transition period for adjustment, so she will need someone with the patience to provide this. Although she can be aloof with strangers, once she gets to know you, Athena will be your loyal friend! Adoption fees: Senior dogs: 7+ years $350.00 Each of our dogs are fully vaccinated to include Bordetella, DHPP, DHLPP and Rabies. We deworm each dog and chip. Lastly, we spay or neuter each of our dogs. Our adoption process includes an initial conversation about the dog to see if the dog is a good match or if another dog could be a more suitable match. We also will complete a home visit. It should be noted that our adoption counselors know the dogs and can best guide any possible adopter with a suitable match. Please visit https://www.calpaws.org/available-dogs for the adoption application! We are always in need of experienced fosters for the amount of dogs we have coming in. Being a foster is such a rewarding experience. If you are interested please review https://www.calpaws.org/fostering
