River came to us this past February. We got his sister, Willow, as well. We were told they were a bonded pair that ended up at the Stockton Shelter after their owner died. We were urged to keep them together, but siblings should not remain together and River and Willow were no exception. We separated the pair. Please note: We are a small rescue and do not have the resources to respond to inquiries. If a dog is on our website, it is still available. We can not arrange meet & greet without an application. We are not a shelter and do not have a facility. All our dogs are in foster homes. Adoption fees: $450 for dogs 12 months/younger, $400 for dogs 1-2 Yrs, $350 for dogs 3-5yrs, and $300 for 6yrs and older Please follow Calpaws K9 rescue on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/CalpawsK9Rescue) for updates on our dogs. Update: We spent the day with River yesterday at the training facility and he will soon be officially ready to go home from his board and train. For those of you who may have missed River in the past, we pulled River from the Stockton shelter along with his sister, Willow. This bonded pair ended up at the shelter after their owner has passed away. We believed them to be about a year old. Willow was adopted quickly, but River was a different story. River was wound tight, he would avoid contact and he was incredibly shut down. He would flee and because he is incredibly agile this boy was able to get away easily. He could clear a fence and get out of a crate. So we did what we do and got him help as well as the tools he needed in order for him to be an adoptable dog. We sent him to a board and train for 8 weeks. In his time at RFRD academy this boy has learned so much, in fact he is a better trained boy than most of our dogs. He has learned to trust and now knows he has a job. Having the purpose gives him stricture and consistency that allows him to feel safe. The upside is he warms up quickly and is more relaxed and loving than he was before he went to his training. To whom ever adopts him, they will get 10 free sessions to continue to learn the work needed for River. So in other words you will be getting free training, skills.....we can all use better skills in becoming a better dog owner. River will be going to a foster home where his skills will be continued to be applied. River would be suited in an active home. River is good about walks and would be great with a person who likes to climb and generally likes to be active. River does like his pets especially from those he trusts. Which means with working his skills, he will be lovable and thrive. River will be ready to be officially adopted in a few more weeks. This makes us so happy because several months ago he was a completely different dog and not adoptable. If you would like to find out more about River, meet him or be a part of his next journey, please send an email to cpk9rescue@gmail.com or go online to CalPaws.org ---------- River came to us this past February. We got his sister, Willow, as well. We were told they were a bonded pair that ended up at the Stockton Shelter after their owner died. We were urged to keep them together, but siblings should not remain together and River and Willow were no exception. We separated the pair. Willow was adopted fairly quickly by a wonderful family. River.....well River was going to need a game plan. River was in several homes, he was destructive, hard to connect with, he was a challenge. Abuse had taken its toll on this boy. We knew he was going to have some issues, we knew he would be a hard dog to place. We reached out to RFRD Academy and sought help on getting this boy some skills, some support and a game plan. For the past few months River has been learning to be a dog. Learning to be in a crate, get used to a slip lead, but more importantly he has been learning to trust. We got a video of River from last week. This is not the same dog we left at the facility several weeks ago, this is a much more confident and engaging dog. I can not tell you how much this video excites me. River will be able to be an amazing dog. He is ready for this forever home. His training was not inexpensive, in fact we hand picked a training that would be suitable for his needs, his issues and quirks. We wanted him to have the tools to be the best dog possible. After this intensive training we feel he is ready. The best part is....whomever gets River will continue on with training. RFRD Academy will train the new owner on all his skills. We have ten free sessions for River and his new family. This way he has support from us, the training and his new family. A win, win situation. So a recap on River for an amazing family looking for a lovely dog. We believe River is a little over a year. He is fully vetted, housed trained. Good with other dogs. He responds well to his name, he is crate trained and comes with his own trainer. Please research this breed before submitting an application or inquiry. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please review our adoption process and then fill out an online adoption form at https://www.calpaws.org/adopting. Experience with obedience training is definitely required. We are a small rescue and do not have the resources to respond to inquiries. If a dog is our website, it is still available. We can not arrange meet & greet without an application. We are always in need of experienced fosters for the amount of dogs we have coming in. Being a foster is such a rewarding experience.
