Phoenix is a sweet hound/basenji or vizsla mix, she is about 45-50 lbs, and is 2-3 years old. She is full grown and won't get any larger. Phoenix found herself at animal control at no fault of her own when her previous owners decided they no longer wanted her, and no longer wanted to care for her. They dropped her off at animal control and didn't look back. Phoenix on the other hand was so sad, for days she wouldn't eat, she cried and every time a volunteer walked in, she would get her hopes up thinking her owners had come for her. She was so withdrawn for the first few weeks being at the shelter. After about 2 weeks Phoenix adjusted to her new normal, she became close to some of the staff at the shelter, and made some doggo friends. The volunteers say she is a sweet medium sized dog, who loves to play and is affectionate with all people! Phoenix can be dog selective and does need slow intros with some dogs, particularly females. She seems to get along with male dogs wonderfully right off the bat, with females she takes a little longer to warm up. After a gentle intro, Phoenix has fallen in love with the puppy in her foster home and LOVES to play with him! She can get very excited while playing and can be a bit too exuberant for some dogs, but does well with dogs who have a similar play style. Phoenix is medium energy, she is a pretty laid back girl in the house and is perfectly happy to lie down and relax for most of the day after her monring walk. She looks forward to her evening walks around the neighborhood and is curious about new places and people. She would do wonderful in a home with a fenced in yard, so she has a safe place to run and play (she loves fetch)! She would do well as an only dog, or with one dog sibling. She would do best with kids 10 years and up, due to her playfulness and excitement, she may unintentionally knock over a small child. Phoenix is housebroken and crate trained and walks ok on leash (she gets distracted by critters on walks and is working on pulling), and does good in the car. She is very smart and knows some commands, she is also a loving and affectionate girl who enjoys cuddling! Phoenix loves to hike and explore, she is a wonderful adventure buddy and cannot wait to find a forever family to go on all the adventures with! From Phoenix's current foster: "Phoenix loves to lay in the sun outside. When she’s in the mood, most squeaky toys she will chase after. She has liked every type of treat and she looooves to get her belly rubbed and will let you do that endlessly! Phoenix has a big heart and lots of love to give. When she nuzzles and puts her head on your lap it’s the best feeling. She’s so smart she knows right from wrong. She just needs a way to burn off some energy and then she will relax for the rest of the day". Phoenix would do best in a home with a fenced in yard.
