I am Aragorn, and depending on who you ask about me, you may hear that I am an evil cat, a monkey, or a big baby. I am one of those "complicated" cats that tends to act out with play aggression and gets overstimulated. This has resulted in me having a bite history, since I think human legs are some of the funnest toys ever, and new things scare me. I have shown I can be a wonderful kitty with a lot of love and affection in me when I'm with the right people, since one of the staff members here has worked with me and even fostered me. She says my name should have been Smeagol/Golem because I guard my favorite things like they are The Precious. She rewards me when I do a good behavior, like when I let someone go by and don't nip at them even when I don't want them to leave, or if I disengage from being overwhelmed. Because of my bite history, plus my high-stress response, I would not be happy in a home with younger children. I need to be in a home with adults only or at least teenagers. I would prefer a quiet home where I can see the same people most days and experience a routine that keeps me happy - I'm not exactly an adventure cat. I am very interested in other cats but don't know how to interact with them. I would be best paired with another cat that is calm and patient as I learn social cues from them. I have a tendency to greet new things with hisses and yowls, and most cats find that upsetting. But I have enjoyed my time with one of my foster brothers, who has been showing me how to play. You can learn more about me on our social media, where my foster mom posted photos and videos of my time in her home. If you aren't in a position to adopt right now, you can still support me through our Pet Pal program. Well, hello there. My name is Cocoa, and I am a gorgeous Oriental Siamese who is now 12 years young. I have been on a bit of a rollercoaster journey since coming to the SPCA, where I lost a lot of weight and they were concerned about my health, but after a lot of vet visits and consultation, we've decided I am ready to be adopted. I will need an adopter who can keep up with my ongoing health needs and adapt to those needs, which may mean vet visits in my near future, but I am sure someone out there must be willing to help a fellow out with that, right? I may be 12 years old, but I still have plenty of spunk and am VERY much a Siamese. My favorite times are the days I get to spend hanging out with staff or volunteers and "helping" them work at their desk. I am happy to jump up on their laps and walk on keyboards and roll around for attention, and I even get feisty still and will play bite. Actually, that feisty side can get me into a touch of trouble. See, I have an ongoing bite history. I was always naughty with my mom and would bite her too rough, and now that I have been at the shelter a little while and settled in, I've shown I really don't like certain situations. Like, children, for instance. I am not very nice to children or their parents, so I have been banned from the community cat rooms, even though I love other cats. So yeah, I am not really a suitable cat for homes with small children, or really anyone that is not prepared to handle my naughty streaks. But I am the purrfect companion for someone who wants a buddy with beautiful blue eyes, a ton of curiosity, and a love of other animals. I am still perfectly young at heart so don't be too intimidated by my age! show less

Hey there! Come pet me and play with me and let me explore, but don't let me get too excited because even though I WANT to be a crazy pup, I am in the long process of being treated for heartworms. I came to the SPCA heartworm-positive and still have about a half a month of treatment left to complete, then it is recovery time. THEN I am eligible to be neutered. Yep, I not only had spaghetti in my heart, but I have meatballs too! Very true to my husky heritage, I am independent and want to know what is in it for me when you are training me or working with me. Like why should I poop on the lawn when my kennel is right here? Convince me why potty training is worth it and I'll listen to you, but give me an inch, and I will be like a naughty child that will push any buttons I can find. Once you show me that it is worth my time and effort to do something and that it might even be F-U-N, then I am happy to oblige and even learn tricks. I'm actually quite good on a leash when I'm on a walk, but getting that leash on me can be the tricky part - again, it's the whole benefits-process. So someone who is familiar with husky breeds, knows how to challenge a dog with high intellect, and can stave off doggie boredom without needing to resort to cardio exercise would be ideal for me. I like other dogs but haven't been able to spend a whole lot of time with them lately, so I may need some guidance in learning to socialize better with them. I am not suitable for a home with cats and likely other small animals, since I want to chase them. DOGust is a special month for us shelter dogs, and there is a BIG discount thanks to a donor covering adoption fees for difficult-to-place dogs throughout the month of August, so what you save on my adoption fee can go right toward forming a training plan with a professional trainer for me. How cool is that? I think that would really ensure I find and stay in my forever home! I am currently available for adoption but with special conditions, in that my family would need to sign a contract to promise to continue my heartworm treatment with my vet, and they would agree that the SPCA of Hancock County is responsible for scheduling my neuter appointment. show less

Hey there! My name is Aoki, and I'm about as gorgeous as cats come. If you've been looking for a unique cat to add to your family, look no further. I'm a big ol' tom (well, neutered now) who looks a lot like a bob cat, although I'm a domestic shorthair. I was the local stray for a neighborhood in Deer Isle and was beloved by all until I got into an accident and needed veterinary assistance. Happily, my vet bills didn't cost the SPCA more than $1,000, and now I'm ready to be adopted. I am a plucky boy with a lot of play energy and a chirpy meow. I can be a bit headstrong with other cats, so it's best to pair me with a kitty family that has strong personalities or that can handle mine. I am NOT very fond of dogs and have tried to show them what a big, tough boy I am through the cage. I love humans of all sizes, kids included, but I don't have much sense of when I am being rough, so I sometimes may scratch or play-bite too hard. This might be scary for a really small kid, so I might be better with kids 8 years and older. Come meet me at the SPCA of Hancock County at 141 Bar Harbor Rd, Trenton, ME 04605!  If you aren't in a position to adopt right now, you can still support me through our Pet Pal program.
