DLH, Torbi Female, about 6 years old "Are ... are you gonna eat me? I'm so scared of being eaten! I just know it'll happen! I lived in the woods once, when I was a wee baby kitten, and I know that things get eaten there all the time, so why wouldn't you want to eat me?    "...Oh, you ... don't? Okay then, maybe we can be friends. But slowly! No sudden moves! I don't like surprises. I like things to remain steady and how they were, which is why I still love being around my mommy. She is a lot more outgoing than me and would probably be quickly adopted on her own by someone who wants a spunky cat, but she is choosing to wait for adoption with me. She's a really good mom that way, even if we're not very alike. She's bubbly and supportive, I'm reserved and need time to get to know people. "We agree on two things as absolutes: one, we must be adopted together, and two, NO DOGS! Dogs are icky and smelly and icky. We don't like it when dogs walk by us and we don't want to live with one. But other than dogs, we seem okay with other cats, at least not caring when they pass by us. We haven't been documented around kids yet so we don't know how that goes. The humans here think we would be pretty happy going to a family of humans and being their special fur babies. Do you think you know the family?" show less

DSH, Gray and white Female, 1~ year old "Admit it, I look like a darling little baby kitten, what with my tiny size and my big green eyes and that tiny button nose. But despite how people thought I was a baby at intake, they quickly figured I was older when they took a look at my mouth. And then I bit their fingers off - okay, not really, but I thought about it! My markings make it look like I'm either grinning or grimacing, and really, either expression suits! I'm full of purrsonality, packed full of it for a mere 6 pounds! Sometimes my caretakers forget I can't be older than a year because I already act like a crabby old lady cat. I'm just an old soul and very mature for my age. "Now, don't take all of that sass as a sign I must be a mean cat. Unless you're like a super-sensitive snowflake or something. I'm just kidding you. But anyway, I'm not a mean cat. I just know what I like and know when to say, hey, that's enough! Don't try to fool me with sweet talk, either. Patronizing me is only going to get you a smack to the face. Just ask Stacie! I keep it real around here. "I don't want to deal with the antics of other cats. It's probably other cats that gave me ringworm! Yup, when I first came here, I had the worst case of ringworm out of all the cats that were affected. It was horrible! I'll never forgive other cats for that ever, ever again. I may not do great with households with small kids either, since I don't have a lot of tolerance for stupidity. Not saying your kids are stupid, but I'm just saying ... Same goes for dogs. Those might be worse than kids. Maybe. "My purrfect life would probably be as a single cat, being pampered and tended to by a family that knows how to treat me right. But I'm open to negotiations." Can't adopt Olivia the sass-master but want to help her out? You can always make a donation to help support the cost of her care! We rely on donations to continue to provide medical care as well as shelter, food, and enrichment for animals like Olivia while they wait for forever homes. We even have affordable sponsor-a-kennel options available. All of this and more can be found at our website, spcahancockcounty.org/donate show less

Mittens DSH, Brown Tabby Female, 8 years old Arrival Date: 3/27/20 "When I came to the SPCA, I just wanted to nestle in my bed and get some sweet loving. I had a bad toothache, so they asked for help from the community, and wow, did you guys help! I later went to a couple different foster homes but I spent my whole time hiding in terror, so they inevitably brought me back in hopes that I would find the right environment for me. I really just need some patience and loving reassurance. I'm a sweet, sensitive soul. You can see it in my face in the video. I'm not sure how to react to all the noise going on in the shelter or in the world, and it makes me want to hide in my bed forever, but then I really do like it when someone seeks me out and gives me some pets and scratches. I am a super loving girl and will make an amazing companion for someone who will be patient with me and give me encouragement and time to come out when I'm scared. I may also do better in a quiet home with just a few other souls in it, nothing too hopping." 4/28/2020 UPDATE: Thanks to the support of the community, Mittens had her dental surgery done and is feeling better! If you would like to know more about Mittens, please feel free to get in touch with us through Petfinder or by calling us at 667-8088 from 11 am to 5 pm. PLEASE NOTE: During our adoption process, we will do a vet check on your current pets or previous pets from the past 10 years to make sure they've been up-to-date with rabies shots (required by law for dogs and cats) and vaccines. We also will do a check with your landlord if you rent. show less

Betty DSH, Black and white Female, 1 year old Arrival Date: 4/25/20 Characteristics sweet, affectionate, bonded "Special notes: Bonded to Boop! Must be adopted together.  "We're the super cute and super sweet Betty and Boop girls! We're a bonded pair of sisters that are now all set and ready to go find our forever homes! We've won over the shelter staff, so much so that they can't wait to see us get lined up for a good home. We're young and lovely girls, and we sure get along with each other just great! We really want to go home together. There's not a lot of dogs around here that are good with cats, so we don't know how we are with dogs, but we are fine with other cats. We also don't seem to mind children! "How is it that NO ONE has asked about us? Is it because we're too sweet? We do have a little bit of spunk, we're not all sugar and spice and everything nice. Nah, that can't be it. Maybe people are too busy looking for kittens or single cats. But we sure hope there is someone out there who is looking for two bonded girls that will bring a lot of fun and love into their lives." Can't adopt Betty and Boop but want to help them out? Make a donation to them today! If you want to do even more, you can consider sponsoring a kennel for a year. DLH, White with dark gray spots Female, 4 years old Special notes: Blueberry does not like other cats but she is okay with some dogs; which dogs, we are never exactly sure as she knows her mind better than we do! Blueberry also struggles to groom herself properly and will require assistance; getting her a haircut at the vet is always an ideal option because she doesn't really like being over-handled. She also has a persistent cough, unknown origin but likely asthma or allergy related.  "Goodness, here I am again! I have been in and out of homes for well over a year now since coming to the SPCA, and sometimes, it really stresses me out! I wish I could settle in and find my purrfect home, but it seems like one bad thing after another happens and I have some pretty rotten luck. But I'm hoping that will change. I have been working on my anxiety and try to assure the humans that I'm as super duper sweet as can be, when I'm in the mood for it. I have a lot of personality and know what I like and don't like, even if humans don't always understand it - poor creatures, they're not the brightest! "I really don't like other cats but I don't have a problem if you previously owned cats and the scent might be there; I just don't like dealing with cat social dynamics more than anything. With dogs, I either hate them or tolerate them but I haven't quite revealed the secret of which ones I like to the humans; their best guess is I want to be the alpha pet and would do better with a timid, unassuming dog. Or be by myself with a human to adore me. I like that idea too. "Despite my finicky preferences, I love to reward good humans with kisses. I will even roll around on the floor and display my ample, fluffy belly while giving kisses; don't think this means I want belly rubs, though. I'm just showing how much I love and trust you, so don't betray that, okay? "I KNOW there has to be a family out there for me where I can finally have my forever home like the other cats and dogs. My journey has been a long one, but I hope it is leading me to the perfect someone that will complete my life and really, truly give me a home." show less

DLH, Gray Tabby and White Male, 8 months old Titian is one of the cats we've recently taken in from a semi-feral cat colony. He is not socialized and would do best with a patient home that would give him time to socialize and adapt and understand he is not really a "lap cat". He may also do well as a barn cat. We define barn cats as cats allowed outdoors to hunt, etc. but still have access to an indoor shelter to protect them from the elements. We commonly adopt barn cats out in pairs. "Humans! There is no end to you! I wish I could just go someplace quiet where I could be left along with not so many humans and animals making noise. And must you get so close when you're cleaning my space? Personal space, please! I'd rather hunt and be in tune with my wild instincts. Can't you people understand that? I know, I am beautiful. You want to touch me. I get that, for a little bit. But I would rather be out there, doing my own thing. I don't think I would mind being with a person who understands that and appreciates it about me." Can't adopt Titian but want to help him out? He’s actually got a GoFundMe going on if you want to give toward it. He’s one of the many semi-feral cats we’ve rescued lately thanks to the joined efforts of the community here in Hancock County. https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/it-takes-a-village-help-spca-neuter-13-cats If you would like to know more about Titian, please feel free to get in touch with us through email or by calling us at 667-8088 from 11 am to 5 pm. Botticelli DLH, Brown tabby and white Male, 2 years old Special notes: Botticelli came from a semi-feral cat colony, so he is not very sociable. However, Botticelli has been doing MUCH better and comes out to see humans when Marcel DuChomp, his "brother", comes out and shows him it's safe. Marcel is very confident unlike Botticelli, so we want to keep these two together so Botticelli can feel safe and improve his temperament.  “Meh, people! I don’t wanna deal with the likes of your kind! Although I guess the treats and tasty foods are nice … Okay, you’re not ALL bad, but don’t think I like you, okay? I gotta act tough because I’m a big, strong boy cat, so don’t listen to the stories from my handlers that I just hiss a little and then you can scruff me and pill me. They don’t know what they’re talking about. I've been showing them how tough I am lately by refusing to give any loves, even with Marcel going soft on the humans! Though I will admit... Marcel is very convincing... I've come out to sniff a hand or two just to see what Marcel is going on about." ”Okay, if I’m totally honest … I’m not a mean cat. It’s not like I want to pick a fight with anyone. I’m just scared and stuck on survival mode. But I won’t bite you like Marcel Du-Chomp will when he's angry. He’s like my brother. We come from the same place. I do fine with other cats, considering I’ve grown up in a cat colony, and I may even warm up a little to a special, patient person if they gave me enough time, treats, and love.” Can't adopt Botticelli but want to help him out?
