I may be a bit skittish at first but I'm not a mean cat. I'm easy to handle and once I realize you're coming to pet me, I actually get excited. I do love head scratches, and I don't mind being picked up every now and then. My old prowling grounds when I was a stray for about two years were near the Small Animal Clinic in Ellsworth, so I'm timid around new people but pretty fine with animals. I would like to be an indoor/outdoor cat, maybe with a big fur family to come back to when I've had my fill of hunting and playing outside. I just really like the fresh air and soaking up some sun. Whenever the humans here open the catio door, I come RUNNING. The SPCA is wary about outdoor cats by main roads because of how many get hit by cars, but they do adopt out indoor/outdoor cats because some, like me, would love to live way off the main road and explore fields. I've been doing fine inside at the shelter, though, and might be happy as an indoor only cat too. As long as you have some big windows I can stare out of! And with some sunny floor spots I can bask in! I'm about 4 years old and healthy, with a sleek black coat and a subdued, sweet temperament. I'm looking for some fun, not trouble, and I've already proved I know how to hang around a territory since I was becoming something of a staple outside SAC until someone caught me and decided it was time to give me more of a life. I hope people aren't too blinded by cute kittens and would give a scared and shy former tom-cat like me a chance to have a home soon! I realy am a sweet boy. I promise. show less

I'm currently in foster to adopt, so that's why you won't see any options to adopt or foster me. Let's hope all goes well and I have a furever home soon! Hi! My name is Poe and I cannot wait to have human of my own! I'm not even two years old and I LOVE human attention. I am looking for a lap to sit on, toys to play with and most importantly, lots of pets and LOVE. I came from a house with one other cat, so I would likely enjoy some feline company if you happen to have some. That being said... these humans tried to introduce me to a couple other cats here and I would not let them put me down on the floor to meet them! I said NO way. But they were boys. I think I'd prefer a girl cat friend. We'll see. Anyway, I wanted to keep my super special PRIVATE room here at the shelter, so I hissed at those boys to keep my suite. I think a slow, proper introduction to one female cat would be fine. As long as you pet me A LOT. I am a sweet, smart boy who will watch your every move while you clean the house and then POUNCE right into your lap the minute you sit down. I also used to live with kids and they're not so bad. I do give "love bites" sometimes, though, so maybe no kids that are really young. I can't help myself. I want you to know I love you! If you are ready for a life of love, please fill out an adoption application on me today. show less

One look at me, and you may think I’ve just come from a dirt bath, but I assure you my orange coat with grey highlights is natural and unique! I swear, I'm clean! And, it’s not just my coat that’s interesting...I’ve had some adventures as well.  I’m a pretty resourceful guy, and when I found myself alone I started hanging around a strangers house. It wasn’t long before they took a liking to me and wanted to help me stay safe.  That’s how I ended up here at the shelter!  Those two nice people brought me in, thinking I looked like a dirty stray, but after a bath ... no grime came off! It's just my coloring. But I did need some help regardless. There are a few things you should know about me….being a stray cat, I was only recently neutered. I am also FIV positive.  FIV stands for feline immunodeficiency virus, which is not contagious or transmissible to people, dogs or other household pets and isn’t contagious or transmissible through saliva or sharing toys or dishes.  The thing to be mindful of is having me around other cats; FIV is only contagious through a very bad deep bite which is unlikely to happen as long as you keep me indoors, and if there are other cats introduce me slowly and properly. I'm a nice guy, I wouldn't do that! If you have any concerns about how I’d be with other cats, the staff here will gladly talk with you and do a safe trial run here at the shelter. And, there’s the possibility that I’d be your one and only cat companion! Which I may not mind! As long as I have ample crunchy treats and CATNIP, I'm happy. Oh, and I have very cute nose and lip freckles. They're my beauty marks. And some of my whiskers are black and some are white. How COOL is that!? Don't you want a unique silly cat like me? And, I mean, look how photogenic I am.  Promising to keep me indoors is important if you decide to adopt me.  You shouldn’t worry too much about the FIV, as I’m told most cats with FIV live long, healthy lives with few or no complications. I’m a sweet two year old boy; litter box trained and playful (I love catnip!) ready to meet YOU! show less

Daffodil DSH, Calico Female, 2 years old “One moment I’m a stray, the next I’m in a safe and warm shelter with food and water and blankies and a clean potty! I guess it’s not SO bad, but it’s different, okay, and it takes time to get used to different. I’m gonna huddle up in the back of my kennel right now and just try to figure out what everyone’s after, if there’s like an angle to all this kindness or what. Then maybe I’ll let you all know more about me. "Now that I've had some time to settle in the shelter, I've decided ... this is nice! I've been showing what a sweet, loving, and silly kitty I am. I love giving the staff rubs and greetings, as you can see in the videos, and I am SUPER expressive. I have a face that just animates a ton. I can't wait to be someone's loving housecat! I'm fine with the idae of human children - more people to love on! - but I'm still not so sure about other animals. "I've since gotten used to people and decided that as long as I get to love you on my terms, I LOVE people. I have my calico personality so I don't really like being told what to do when I don't feel like doing it, but I would love to be a buddy to an older couple or someone who could use a companion. I'm not too keen on other cats and have gotten territorial when visitors came by my home; that led to me biting at my owner at the time, which scared them. Redirected aggression is kind of common in us cats, though, especially when we're guarding our turf and letting others know who is the boss. I really didn't mean any harm and have been good for my handlers here at the shelter. I would really love to go to a home and stay there." PLEASE NOTE: During our adoption process, we will do a vet check on your current pets or previous pets from the past 10 years to make sure they've been up-to-date with rabies shots (required by law for dogs and cats) and vaccines. We also will do a check with your landlord if you rent. show less

Kandinsky DMH, Gray and white Male, 2 years old Special notes: Kandinsky came from a semi-feral cat colony, but he's come a LONG way. He used to hide and shy away from us but now he loves being pet, leans into snuggles, and even comes out to say hello. He's still pretty laid back, though, and likes to nap A LOT. He's very sweet and he's kind of a dad to a few of the others that are left from the cat colony. He takes care of them. Especially Warhol, who is still very unsure of humans. Warhol and Kandinsky love to snuggle and play together, and Kandinsky is kind of like Warhol's emotional support cat. We think Warhol would come around and be just as snuggly as Kandinsky once in a home and given the time to relax and come out of his shell. No guarantees, but Kandinsky is a great role model! Can't adopt Kandinsky or Warhol but want to help him out? He’s actually got a GoFundMe going on if you want to give toward it. He’s one of the many semi-feral cats we’ve rescued lately thanks to the joined efforts of the community here in Hancock County. https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/it-takes-a-village-help-spca-neuter-13-cats If you would like to know more about Kandinsky, please feel free to get in touch with us through email or by calling us at 667-8088 from 11 am to 5 pm. DLH, Orange and White Male, Adult Warhol is one of the cats we've recently taken in from a semi-feral cat colony. He is not socialized and would do best with a patient home that would give him time to socialize and adapt and understand he is not really a "lap cat".  "I have been very vocal about my displeasure, but on the other hand, you humans should be happy becaust that means I've given you plenty of warnings as opposed to going right for the swat. Some of my handlers describe me as very hissy and hidey, known to even growl at them. I consider it fair warning. You get in my space, I will get in your face. Enough said. I may be smaller than some of the other boys from our semi-feral colony, but I'm very manly too! Right now, I can't imagine being a snugly lap cat like some of them are starting to weaken and become... But I don't know, maybe someone really good with cats will be able to bond with me over time... if my buddy Kandinsky comes with me to be the guinea pig with our new human servants. He's much sweeter - I mean, weaker, than I am. But I like him. We take naps together and even play and wrestle each other. He seems to love being pet by you all but I'll give him a pass.
