I was found as a stray in Maryland, but it's easy to see that I have been well-fed and love people. I am very calm and sweet, as you can tell from my picture! The animal care manager thinks I am PURR-FECT. I am totally unfazed when other kitties growl at me, and I likely would be a wonderful family cat, as long as the children remain gentle. I find dogs distasteful in general, but if your dog is polite I can co-exist. I have diabetes, which is managed with insulin. The shelter staff here are more than willing to show you how to give me this insulin. I don't like the insulin very much, but because I'm such a good girl, I behave well for it - I just try to hide a little when I know it is time for the poke. Having diabetes does mean I should be an indoor-only kitty, because I need insulin after I eat food and you don't know what I might get into if I am allowed to roam. Also I cannot be allowed to free feed on food. If my future family already has kitties, this can be solved by offering small portions to us kitties throughout the day and taking away the food after mealtimes. Or you can invest in a microchip scanning feeder, like the SureFeed Microchip feeder, and have one programmed to each kitty so we can't get into each other's food. Plenty of options! The final thing you should know about me? I am a happy drooler. Like when I am totally content and blissfully purring on you, I will drool away. This may be due to the fact I have a need for ongoing dental work and maintenance. Or maybe I just have a lot of saliva. Whatever the case, I would love to meet you and spend some time snuggling and hanging out. show less

Hey hey hey! I'm your new best friend! Here, let me get closer - close enough that I'm the only cat you see! I HAVE to be the center of your attention, obviously. How else will you know that I desperately need your affection? Want a friend who will always want pets, snuggles, and playtime? That's me! I also love other cats so it would be fun to have a home with another cat. I've never met a kid or a dog before, so who knows if I'll like them, but probably! I do like everyone I've met so far. They've all said how gorgeous I am, as if they need to remind me, and talked about how lovely my smokey coat is. Anyways, I would love to have a home to be doted on so come meet me soon! show less

Oh my, oh my. I'm Clover, and I'm an extremely sweet dog - the sweetest - but I'm so scared and just absolutely craving routine and stability. I would love to stick in one spot with the same people. I am much more of a snuggler and stay-at-home girl than the sort who wants to run around and get energy out. I was absolutely PETRIFIED when I came to the SPCA of Hancock County, but through my fear, the staff could see there was a warm, kind-hearted pup waiting to emerge. While I still shrink back and cower when approached sometimes, I greet the familiar faces with big, broad tail wags and a happy dance of excitement. So although it may take me a bit to trust new people, my curiosity can outweigh my fear. Once I'm comfortable with you, I'm unabashedly playful with humans and other dogs. I REALLY love other dogs, sometimes too much so. I have a tendency to get right up in their face, so while I think I'm being friendly, I'm not always the right fit for homes with dogs that want more of this thing called "personal space". I am a major leaner and hugger, so my humans should be prepared for a big lap dog. Another thing about me is I love children! I can be very gentle with small children too. I'm not sure how I am with cats - they are still pretty new to me, and judging by my impaired dog social skills, I might not know how to properly socialize with a cat. But a dog-savvy cat might be a pawfect friend for me, as long as they don't mind extra kisses and attention. Hi! My name is Betty and while I haven't been here long the shelter staff has a few details about me. I was raised half outdoors in a very large cat colony, but I had access to the inside of a home. I wasn't handled much so I'm not used to the amount of contact I receive here at the shelter. I'm finally adjusting! In fact, now I stay out and the open and let people come up to pet me. Shhh, can you hear me purring? Don't tell anyone, it will ruin my image. I love my siblings, and I would love to go home with them or into a home with other cats. I'm not sure about dogs or kids because I haven't tried it. Because I am just learning about people, it would have to be very cat savvy kids who know how to go slow. show less

Hey Everyone! My name is Cedar, and I'm a new resident at he shelter. I came from a local large cat colony so I know life on the streets. That hasn't effected my opinion on home life though! I am just so lonely all the time! Sometimes the staff calls me "desperate". They just don't understand that I love people so much, that I just can't possibly be away from them. I really want a person who will spend time together, play together, and let me cuddle with them. Would you like that too? I would LOVE to be adopted with adorable little kitten, Kooky. We're the best of friends! If I can't go with Kooky, maybe you can make sure I have another kitten to love? I do have some mysterious hair loss on the back of my neck and some itchy skin. It appears to be the result of some type of atopic dermatitis, so it's likely not contagious, but you may want to be careful about quickly introducing me to other animals just in case since the root cause has not been identified. It may be the result of an allergy or reaction to stress at this time and may resolve on its own or by switching my diet or environment after identifying potential triggers. show less

Hi... Hmm, how do I describe myself when I am just now figuring out who I am? Well, I know I love chicken, other cats, playing with toys, and looking out the windows. How do I like people? Oh I don't really know. They're so scary! Yet I'm dying of curiosity at the same time! I want to play with them, they do give me snacks, and sometimes when they pet me it's nice. I still run away from them sometimes, but they told me that it's okay. I just need time to figure what the heck they are all about. Hi my name is Hercules, and as my name suggests I am a strong, young, buff boy. I am only about a year old even though all my photos make me look like a cranky old man. I've had it rough living out in the Maine woods so I'm happy to be somewhere warm where I am fed regularly. I'm learning to follow my namesake by being very brave and letting the staff pet me. It actually is kind of nice so far, but I'm keeping an eye on them in case they try anything tricky (like trying to brush my mats) I'd really like a home that's quiet where I can learn how to be an indoor cat! Hi My name is Rue and while I haven't been here long the shelter staff has a few details about me. I was raised half outdoors in a very large cat colony, but I had access to the inside of a home.
