So before you jump in my face, give me a second and listen: my name is Jemma, and I'm an old-fashioned dog. You may wonder, what does that mean? Well, back when some of you humans were kids, you used to keep dogs to guard the house. These guard dogs would bark their heads off whenever someone came to the house, and that was accepted as how dogs were. They got put in the backyard when visitors came, and strangers, even friends of the family, mostly left them alone so they wouldn't bite you. Guard dogs like me are fine dogs who are good with our family. We don't want to be dressed up in tutus or put in strollers or have birthday parties with doggie friends in a gazebo. Nowadays, old-fashioned dogs like that are called aggressive or reactive, and let me tell, it is really hard to get adopted when people see you that way! It is true that I've bitten strangers but I've NEVER bitten my familiar handlers. In situations where other dogs might lash out and bite, such as when someone accidentally falls on them or when it's time to trim toenails, I keep my cool. I am a terrifically loyal and, dare I say, sweet friend and am a really good dog, if you would just keep me at home and keep strangers away from me. Now to make me into a different kind of dog is going to take a lot of time, patience, and commitment but is theoretically possible.  I've been evaluated by 3 trainers and have a training plan. I am a quick learner and trust my handler absolutely. I've been willing to get to know various new staff members at the SPCA without issues, and you know what? They love me just the way I am, and hope someone out there can appreciate me as I am too.  Honestly, I would hope my future family would be willing to love me for who I am and work with me. The less we have to change for each other, the more successful our relationship will be, just like all other relationships in life. And before you worry that I'm a dog that needs immediat rescuing, just remember, at least I'm happy and safe with friends right now, and that's better than being in and out of homes that aren't the right fit for me. So please consider your circumstances carefully, and also feel free to call and talk to the Animal Care Manager about me. She'll want to talk to my potential adopters in any case, and can help you decide on a strategy or maybe redirect you to another dog that could use your help, if I'm not the right fit for you. Oh wow, you're so big, it's a little bit scary! I might need to protect my sister, Fünf, from you. But if you're a good person, maybe we can be friends. It just takes a little to win my trust. My name is Acht, and I'm a nice kitten, just quite shy. I do love my sister a lot, but I also have come to just love other cats. Still, it would be nice if someone wanted to adopt both of us! I would do best in a quiet household that has enough patience to let me take my time to open up and settle in. I am much happier when I have a high place to hide on, so a cat tree would be perfect for me! But I'll also enjoy climbing shelves, if you'll have some just for kitties like me. I LOVE other cats. So much so that I can't imagine being in a home without cats. I would make a great young friend to a lonely kitty. And having a friend that trusts humans and is more outgoing might help me open up more too. I would likely be fine with dogs that give me plenty of time and space to get used to them - but an energetic dog that runs in my face is bound to scare me. But little kids that haven't learned how to respect an animal's space or keep indoor voices would like frighten my sister and me, so we would do best in a quiet home with no children or older children only. If you're looking to adopt a less-adoptable pet but still want a kitten, then maybe Fünf and me are for you! People are still less likely to adopt black cats like us, sadly, and because we're still working on being socialized and are skittish, people often pass us up for the more snuggly and outgoing kittens. Hopefully someone loving and patient sees us and decides to give us a good home too, though! Can't adopt but want to help out? Oh my. You're so big! I'm Fünf. I'm quite a shy little girl and am still getting used to people. I find a lot of comfort in snuggling with my brother, Acht, so it would make me a lot happier to be adopted with him, but I would also be happy if I could just go to a home with another kitty. Despite being skittish, I'm a nice kitten, I just need someone who will be patient and give me time to open up in a quiet home. It is hard to tell how my brother and I would be with dogs, but I would probably be fine with an older, cat-friendly dog that gives me time and space to get used to them. If the dog is in my face and energetic, then that will likely scare me. Little kids scare me, to be honest. They have to be really good with kitties and understand that I don't want to be grabbed or forced to snuggle. So a home without kids or with kids that are respectful of my space would be ideal. Like I said, I LOVE other cats. I can't imagine going to a home without a cat in it. If my brother and I aren't adopted together, I still hope I'm with another cat. They're the best! I would make a wonderful young companion for a cat that is getting on in years or that is lonely and needs a playmate - I am both a massive snuggler and love to play with other cats. If you're looking to adopt a less-adoptable pet but still want a kitten, then maybe Acht and me are for you! People are still less likely to adopt black cats like us, sadly, and because we're still working on being socialized and are skittish, people often pass us up for the more snuggly and outgoing kittens. Hello! Are you my new best friend? Let me give you kisses! MWAH! My name is Hermes. I guess I should've started with that, sorry! I'm a bit awkward, but I really am excited to meet you. I'm a super sweet dog and generally a staff and volunteer favorite here at the SPCA because I love everybody. Sometimes I love you all too much! It can be hard for me to deal with the idea of being separated from my favorite people, so I hope my future family is dog-savvy and ready to be my security and rock. My health concerns and the fact I've been in and out of shelters and homes have made me a bit of an anxious guy, so you might notice I get obsessive and overly eager to please. I would LOVE to be with someone who already has some experience with dogs and is at a point in their life where they're settled enough that they can take some time to establish a good friendship with me, then follow up with being my mentor. No doubt, I'll be a super good boy for them! So about those health concerns ... I was born wtih this thing called hypospadias, which was surgically corrected when I was younger so it means I pee from my back end, below my anus. As one volunteer puts it, I pee backwards! This causes a bit of dribbling, especially on my own legs, so I need humans to use baby wipes on me after I go, just to prevent a painful skin condition called urine scalding. Ouch! That was NOT fun! On top of that, I need my daily thyroid medication, along with an antidepressant which helps a lot with my separation anxiety, and I eat a special prescription food because of my thyroid and sensitive skin. Sorry if this makes me sound like a high-maintenance dog! Maybe if I give you more kisses, it will make it better? I am incredibly affectionate and love humans of all sizes. And although cats are terrifying, terrible creatures to me, I love little human children. I can't go home with other dogs because I was brought to the SPCA after a dogfight. Hard to walk away from a history like that! But I do love every person I meet, so I hope a family gives me a chance soon! Can't adopt but want to help out?
