Hey there, my name is Dozer, or at least that's what the people who found me call me. See, I was found as a stray but, sadly, was never claimed. Still, I'm a very affectionate, wiggly and snuggly lap dog. I've been mostly good with other dogs but can be pretty reactive to cats, so I'd probably do best without those small, fast little guys. There is still a lot people don't know about me because of my mysterious past, but I have shown some tendencies to have medium-level food guarding behaviors, likely due to some previous experiences. The staff here don't think it's a huge problem; they say with strict positive reinforcement training, these behaviors can be curbed. That makes me feel better, like I'm not such a problem dog! I've been fine with staff I'm familiar with and comfortable having them around my food, including receiving treats or having my bowl set down in front of me. But I really don't like it if you respond to my food-guarding with negative reinforcement. Telling me no or making a loud noise can scare the beejebus out of me, and that can bring out the ol' survival instincts. For those reasons, staff says it's in my best interest to not be in a home with small children who might be likely to pick up my food, and I would do best with adopters who have previous experience with resource/food guarding or who are willing to learn more about it - especially if there are already other animals in the home. Positive reinforcement training is also helping me learn some manners, which most owned doggos might already know but since I was a stray, I didn't really get the chance to learn. I am eager to please and happy to work with any person who is nice to me. Staff say I'm a goofy goober and that I would be a wonderful addition to your family! show less

Hey there, my name is Dude because I'm THE dude you want to have around. I am a big boy who was originally rescued by PAWS Brave Hearts in Calais. They sent me over to my new friends at the SPCA so I might meet more folks and maybe even my future family. I am a great guy who loves to hang out with his people and chill, but I can find loud and busy places (like a shelter) overwhelming. I would not really deal well with tiny, tiny kids since, like an animal shelter, they tend to be noisy and smelly. But if you give me time and plenty of assurance and a quiet space, you'll find I'm a really sweet boy. Come meet me at the SPCA of Hancock County at 141 Bar Harbor Rd, Trenton, ME 04605! Please note that right now, to keep all the humans that care for me safe, visits are by appointment only. So fill out an application on me and they can schedule a meet-and-greet at your convenience. I hope we're a pawfect fit! And if we're not, you might meet your next pet while visiting me, so it's worth it to fill out that application! If you aren't in a position to adopt right now, you can still support me through our Pet Pal program. Monthly givers in our Pet Pal program get letters, photos, and more directly from us animals - you can even mention you want to hear directly from me. Join today! show less

Hello! My name is Oliver. I'm a lovely young brown tabby male who used to roam the streets as a tom cat until PAWS Brave Hearts saved me. They actually brought me inside during the dead of winter, when Maine was at its most arctic cold. They taught me a lot about humans and manners and how to be friendly with people and other cats, plus they made sure I was nursed back to good health and this weird thing called "neutered". I like to be around other cats, but I'm also happy to be by myself since I can sometimes get possessive over my resources - that happens when you know what it's like to have starved before! But I've done a good job at learning to share, so if the right family wanted me to live with other cats, I could as long as they made sure we had our own bowls of food and water and litterboxes. What I do NOT like is dogs. UGH! Just seeing a dog made me flip my kennel inside out here at the SPCA. Gosh, I couldn't imagine LIVING with one. I know you humans come in small packages sometimes, called children, and I am okay with the ones that are mindful and mature and understand animals like me. But I don't think I would want to live with a grabby baby or toddler who doesn't understand when I don't want my tail or ears touched. If you think you could give me a chance, come by and meet me! I would be happy to introduce myself. Come meet me at the SPCA of Hancock County at 141 Bar Harbor Rd, Trenton, ME 04605! Hey there, I'm Marie Antoinette, and not to lose my head or anything, but I'm something of a super mom. You see, when my six kittens were only three days old, I got hit by a car and broke my back leg. Despite that incredible pain, I went back to my babies and took care of them. Some nice people found me and brought me and my babies to the SPCA, where we were then rushed to the Lucerne Veterinary Hospital and went into foster care with a vet there. They kept me as painfree as possible while I continued to nurse my babies, until the babies were big enough to be weaned and I could finally have FHO surgery to fix my hurting hip. Now I'm at the SPCA, and I have to admit, I am GLAD to have that part of my life behind me. You can still see a little bit of the old battle wounds in my shaved hind end and the way I limp a little bit. But mostly I like to boss humans around and let them know which ones are on my approved list and which ones aren't. If I like you, I'll even reach up and give you a hug. If I don't like you, well, I'll let you know. Come meet me at the SPCA of Hancock County at 141 Bar Harbor Rd, Trenton, ME 04605!
