"Don't you just love long walks on a beautiful day? I sure do! My name is Shelby. I'm having a sleepover at my foster mom's house thanks to the SPCA and Old Dogs New Digs but I don't think I'm THAT old. I'm a really active and good-natured 8-year-old shepherd/lab mix. I get spooked easily, so young kids aren't the best fit for me, and other dogs scare me, but I don't mind cats! I really love going for walks and playing with my toys. I walk nicely on a leash like a good girl, and I won't destroy your house. I'm just a bit sensitive, but I promise it's because I'm a really smart girl who just wants to make you happy. I wish people weren't so afraid of adopting old dogs; I have a lot of life left in me that I wish I could spend with my very own family!" Shelby has her own playlist on our YouTube! Enjoy her videos here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTKaA2Dm5sVgVh9nWyk2w2ryzB7Oa2npd Shelby is a shepherd/lab mix. You can see the lab in her when she plays ball, runs, and jumps-- she surely doesn't look 8 years old! Her shepherd side can make her a little "twitchy" sometimes; skittish, reluctant to give up her favorite toy. She is very smart, though, and positive reinforcement training works well with her. When Shelby first came to the shelter, she had ear infections and became very sensitive about her ears being touched or having a harness or other material go over her head. Now her foster is happy to report that after a lot of practice with giving Shelby treats, she is good about her ears and eyes being handled. Shelby's ideal home would be an active adult household that loves going out for walks. She's skittish and cautious, so she needs someone who can understand her sensitive temperament. For instance, she does not like to be handled roughly. For this reason, we don't recommend her in a house with young children because she would find that stressful. Shelby gets nervous around other dogs. It's likely that living with another dog will stress her out too much, but she does not have an issue going out to parks or around town. She's even been known to wag her tail in non-aggressive curiosity when she spies a friendly dog from a distance. Shelby is fine with cats, even a little wary of them when they're too bossy. Overall, she is a super sweet companion dog with a lot of life left in her, and we know she would love to spend that life walking with a favorite human or two!
