DLH, Orange and white Male, 3 years old Special notes: Hopper is one of the cats we recently took in from a semi-feral cat colony. He is not very socialized and would do best in a home that could give him space to adapt. He likes quiet voices and would prefer a gentle, safe house. He can coexist with other cats and at least some dogs. He may find children overwhelming. "I have been a very scared kitty! They call me Hopper because I want to hop on out of here! I did everything I could to get away from this shelter when I first arrived; I bolted, I hid, I pooped all over myself so I was a stinky mess no one wanted to touch.. but they cleaned me up and took care of me anyway, and then they gave me soft, gentle scratches behind my ears and said in a nice voice that I was going to be okay. That was actually pretty nice. I've been trying to settle down since then, but it's hard. I would be way happier if I could go to a nice, quiet home that would be really patient and nice with me and give me time to come out of my shell on my own, maybe with some treats to encourage me." Can't adopt Hopper but want to help him? He has a GoFundMe! Please note: During our adoption process we will do a vet check on your current pet's or previous pet's from the last 10 years to make sure they are updated on rabies and other vaccinations. (Required by law for cats and dogs.) We will also do a check with your landlord if you rent. show less

DLH, Calico Female, about 6 years old "Hey, come a little bit closer and ... ha! Got your mask! I like bopping people when they come up to my cage, but don't worry, I'm pretty nice about it with no claws out. I just wanna have some fun with you! I'm friendly and playful, and you would probably think looking at me and Rice that I was the younger one. Nope! I'm her MOM. I still got them young looks! "We've been at this shelter for a little over a month now. I lived with a family for 6 years after they found me in the woods, but then the dreaded allergies struck our home, and Rice and me came to this shelter in hopes of finding a new furever family. The thing is, Rice is so afraid of the world; she really thinks everything and everyone wants to eat her, but she's a good girl once she realizes you're not a threat. So she's really dependent on going wherever I go because I'm the confident and bouncy one. That's why we're a bonded pair that needs to stay together. "My daughter and I can seem like polar opposites but we get along great. I don't mind if she's a little clingy. I like engaging with people and her and pushing her out of her shell. And I LOVE making a run for it when you open my cage. Chase is such a fun game to play, don't you think? So you might swear I'm a permanent kitten with my antics and purr-sonality, and it may be hard to believe I'm actually Rice's mom when she's so laidback, but there you have it! "We agree on two things as absolutes: one, we must be adopted together, and two, NO DOGS! Dogs are icky and smelly and icky. We don't like it when dogs walk by us and we don't want to live with one. But other than dogs, we seem okay with other cats, at least not caring when they pass by us. We haven't been documented around kids yet so we don't know how that goes. The humans here think we would be pretty happy going to a family of humans and being their special fur babies. Do you think you know the family?" show less

DLH, Torbi Female, about 6 years old "Are ... are you gonna eat me? I'm so scared of being eaten! I just know it'll happen! I lived in the woods once, when I was a wee baby kitten, and I know that things get eaten there all the time, so why wouldn't you want to eat me?    "...Oh, you ... don't? Okay then, maybe we can be friends. But slowly! No sudden moves! I don't like surprises. I like things to remain steady and how they were, which is why I still love being around my mommy. She is a lot more outgoing than me and would probably be quickly adopted on her own by someone who wants a spunky cat, but she is choosing to wait for adoption with me. She's a really good mom that way, even if we're not very alike. She's bubbly and supportive, I'm reserved and need time to get to know people. DSH, Gray and white Female, 1~ year old "Admit it, I look like a darling little baby kitten, what with my tiny size and my big green eyes and that tiny button nose. But despite how people thought I was a baby at intake, they quickly figured I was older when they took a look at my mouth. And then I bit their fingers off - okay, not really, but I thought about it! My markings make it look like I'm either grinning or grimacing, and really, either expression suits! I'm full of purrsonality, packed full of it for a mere 6 pounds! Sometimes my caretakers forget I can't be older than a year because I already act like a crabby old lady cat. I'm just an old soul and very mature for my age. "Now, don't take all of that sass as a sign I must be a mean cat. Unless you're like a super-sensitive snowflake or something. I'm just kidding you. But anyway, I'm not a mean cat. I just know what I like and know when to say, hey, that's enough! Don't try to fool me with sweet talk, either. Patronizing me is only going to get you a smack to the face. Just ask Stacie! I keep it real around here. "I don't want to deal with the antics of other cats. It's probably other cats that gave me ringworm! Yup, when I first came here, I had the worst case of ringworm out of all the cats that were affected. It was horrible! I'll never forgive other cats for that ever, ever again. I may not do great with households with small kids either, since I don't have a lot of tolerance for stupidity. Not saying your kids are stupid, but I'm just saying ... Same goes for dogs. Those might be worse than kids. Maybe. "My purrfect life would probably be as a single cat, being pampered and tended to by a family that knows how to treat me right. But I'm open to negotiations." Can't adopt Olivia the sass-master but want to help her out? You can always make a donation to help support the cost of her care! We rely on donations to continue to provide medical care as well as shelter, food, and enrichment for animals like Olivia while they wait for forever homes. We even have affordable sponsor-a-kennel options available. All of this and more can be found at our website, spcahancockcounty.org/donate show less

Mittens DSH, Brown Tabby Female, 8 years old Arrival Date: 3/27/20 "When I came to the SPCA, I just wanted to nestle in my bed and get some sweet loving. I had a bad toothache, so they asked for help from the community, and wow, did you guys help! I later went to a couple different foster homes but I spent my whole time hiding in terror, so they inevitably brought me back in hopes that I would find the right environment for me. I really just need some patience and loving reassurance. I'm a sweet, sensitive soul. You can see it in my face in the video. I'm not sure how to react to all the noise going on in the shelter or in the world, and it makes me want to hide in my bed forever, but then I really do like it when someone seeks me out and gives me some pets and scratches. I am a super loving girl and will make an amazing companion for someone who will be patient with me and give me encouragement and time to come out when I'm scared. I may also do better in a quiet home with just a few other souls in it, nothing too hopping." 4/28/2020 UPDATE: Thanks to the support of the community, Mittens had her dental surgery done and is feeling better! If you would like to know more about Mittens, please feel free to get in touch with us through Petfinder or by calling us at 667-8088 from 11 am to 5 pm. PLEASE NOTE: During our adoption process, we will do a vet check on your current pets or previous pets from the past 10 years to make sure they've been up-to-date with rabies shots (required by law for dogs and cats) and vaccines. Betty DSH, Black and white Female, 1 year old Arrival Date: 4/25/20 Characteristics sweet, affectionate, bonded "Special notes: Bonded to Boop! Must be adopted together.  "We're the super cute and super sweet Betty and Boop girls! We're a bonded pair of sisters that are now all set and ready to go find our forever homes! We've won over the shelter staff, so much so that they can't wait to see us get lined up for a good home. We're young and lovely girls, and we sure get along with each other just great! We really want to go home together. There's not a lot of dogs around here that are good with cats, so we don't know how we are with dogs, but we are fine with other cats. We also don't seem to mind children! "How is it that NO ONE has asked about us? Is it because we're too sweet? We do have a little bit of spunk, we're not all sugar and spice and everything nice. Nah, that can't be it. Maybe people are too busy looking for kittens or single cats. But we sure hope there is someone out there who is looking for two bonded girls that will bring a lot of fun and love into their lives." Can't adopt Betty and Boop but want to help them out? Make a donation to them today! If you want to do even more, you can consider sponsoring a kennel for a year.
