So before you jump in my face, give me a second and listen: my name is Jemma, and I'm an old-fashioned dog. You may wonder, what does that mean? Well, back when some of you humans were kids, you used to keep dogs to guard the house. These guard dogs would bark their heads off whenever someone came to the house, and that was accepted as how dogs were. They got put in the backyard when visitors came, and strangers, even friends of the family, mostly left them alone so they wouldn't bite you. Guard dogs like me are fine dogs who are good with our family. We don't want to be dressed up in tutus or put in strollers or have birthday parties with doggie friends in a gazebo. Nowadays, old-fashioned dogs like that are called aggressive or reactive, and let me tell, it is really hard to get adopted when people see you that way! It is true that I've bitten strangers but I've NEVER bitten my familiar handlers. In situations where other dogs might lash out and bite, such as when someone accidentally falls on them or when it's time to trim toenails, I keep my cool. I am a terrifically loyal and, dare I say, sweet friend and am a really good dog, if you would just keep me at home and keep strangers away from me. Now to make me into a different kind of dog is going to take a lot of time, patience, and commitment but is theoretically possible. I've been evaluated by 3 trainers and have a training plan. I am a quick learner and trust my handler absolutely. I've been willing to get to know various new staff members at the SPCA without issues, and you know what? They love me just the way I am, and hope someone out there can appreciate me as I am too. Honestly, I would hope my future family would be willing to love me for who I am and work with me. The less we have to change for each other, the more successful our relationship will be, just like all other relationships in life. And before you worry that I'm a dog that needs immediat rescuing, just remember, at least I'm happy and safe with friends right now, and that's better than being in and out of homes that aren't the right fit for me. So please consider your circumstances carefully, and also feel free to call and talk to the Animal Care Manager about me. She'll want to talk to my potential adopters in any case, and can help you decide on a strategy or maybe redirect you to another dog that could use your help, if I'm not the right fit for you. Can't adopt but want to help out? Consider sponsoring instead! When you become a Pet Pal and give monthly on behalf of our shelter animals, you are ensuring they receive the best care possible during their stay with the SPCA on their journey to a forever home. You not only are their sponsor, you're their truest friend!
