Hello there!  My name is Petunia and I am one of the cats that were transferred to the SPCA from Maryland! I am a lovely, playful girl who ADORES her toys!  I had been staying at that shelter since February of 2021. The reason I've been in the shelter so long is that I am a special needs cat! I have tested positive for Calicivirus. Much like FeLV (Feline Leukemia) this virus can be spread to other cats through saliva if they do not have a distemper vaccine. Unlike FeLV, though, I can enjoy a long and healthy life! I'm mostly what you call a carrier cat, meaning cats that are not vaccinated with FVRCP are at the most risk around me.  While in Maryland, I was in a few foster homes with and without other cats. Calicivirus cannot be transferred to humans or dogs. I was treated for a persistent upper respiratory back in Maryland and may need to be treated again in the future. I encourage you to do your research about my special needs. I can live happily with other cats as long as you keep them up-to-date on their FVRCP vaccine (also commonly called feline distemper), though it would likely be best if I went to a home with cats over a year old and no elderly, immune-compromised cats. If you're looking for a fun, lovable kitty that is less-adoptable, look no further - I would LOVE to meet you! show less

Hey there, new best friend! Forget all those other kitties, focus on ME! My name is Momma Moreen. I come from Maryland, where I had a litter of kittens, even though I'm barely more than a kitten myself at a year old. Yikes! I'm so ready to be someone's baby instead. I do tolerate other animals but would be better with slow introductions to them, and I would be just as happy as an only kitty. I would LOVE to have my own family to love on. I am super outgoing and adore attention. I would make a wonderful family cat! Come by and meet me (and I guess some of my other friends from Maryland, but mostly me!). Come meet me at the SPCA of Hancock County at 141 Bar Harbor Rd, Trenton, ME 04605! Please note that right now, to keep all the humans that care for me safe, visits are by appointment only. So fill out an application on me and they can schedule a meet-and-greet at your convenience. I hope we're a pawfect fit! And if we're not, you might meet your next pet while visiting me, so it's worth it to fill out that application! If you aren't in a position to adopt right now, you can still support me through our Pet Pal program. Monthly givers in our Pet Pal program get letters, photos, and more directly from us animals - you can even mention you want to hear directly from me. Join today! show less

So before you jump in my face, give me a second and listen: my name is Jemma, and I'm an old-fashioned dog. You may wonder, what does that mean? Well, back when some of you humans were kids, you used to keep dogs to guard the house. These guard dogs would bark their heads off whenever someone came to the house, and that was accepted as how dogs were. They got put in the backyard when visitors came, and strangers, even friends of the family, mostly left them alone so they wouldn't bite you. Guard dogs like me are fine dogs who are good with our family. We don't want to be dressed up in tutus or put in strollers or have birthday parties with doggie friends in a gazebo. Nowadays, old-fashioned dogs like that are called aggressive or reactive, and let me tell, it is really hard to get adopted when people see you that way! It is true that I've bitten strangers but I've NEVER bitten my familiar handlers. In situations where other dogs might lash out and bite, such as when someone accidentally falls on them or when it's time to trim toenails, I keep my cool. I am a terrifically loyal and, dare I say, sweet friend and am a really good dog, if you would just keep me at home and keep strangers away from me. Now to make me into a different kind of dog is going to take a lot of time, patience, and commitment but is theoretically possible.  I've been evaluated by 3 trainers and have a training plan. I am a quick learner and trust my handler absolutely. I've been willing to get to know various new staff members at the SPCA without issues, and you know what? They love me just the way I am, and hope someone out there can appreciate me as I am too.  Honestly, I would hope my future family would be willing to love me for who I am and work with me. The less we have to change for each other, the more successful our relationship will be, just like all other relationships in life. And before you worry that I'm a dog that needs immediat rescuing, just remember, at least I'm happy and safe with friends right now, and that's better than being in and out of homes that aren't the right fit for me. So please consider your circumstances carefully, and also feel free to call and talk to the Animal Care Manager about me. She'll want to talk to my potential adopters in any case, and can help you decide on a strategy or maybe redirect you to another dog that could use your help, if I'm not the right fit for you. Can't adopt but want to help out? Consider sponsoring instead! When you become a Pet Pal and give monthly on behalf of our shelter animals, you are ensuring they receive the best care possible during their stay with the SPCA on their journey to a forever home. You not only are their sponsor, you're their truest friend! show less

Oh wow, you're so big, it's a little bit scary! I might need to protect my sister, Fünf, from you. But if you're a good person, maybe we can be friends. It just takes a little to win my trust. My name is Acht, and I'm a nice kitten, just quite shy. I do love my sister a lot, but I also have come to just love other cats. Still, it would be nice if someone wanted to adopt both of us! I would do best in a quiet household that has enough patience to let me take my time to open up and settle in. I am much happier when I have a high place to hide on, so a cat tree would be perfect for me! But I'll also enjoy climbing shelves, if you'll have some just for kitties like me. I LOVE other cats. So much so that I can't imagine being in a home without cats. I would make a great young friend to a lonely kitty. And having a friend that trusts humans and is more outgoing might help me open up more too. I would likely be fine with dogs that give me plenty of time and space to get used to them - but an energetic dog that runs in my face is bound to scare me. But little kids that haven't learned how to respect an animal's space or keep indoor voices would like frighten my sister and me, so we would do best in a quiet home with no children or older children only. If you're looking to adopt a less-adoptable pet but still want a kitten, then maybe Fünf and me are for you! People are still less likely to adopt black cats like us, sadly, and because we're still working on being socialized and are skittish, people often pass us up for the more snuggly and outgoing kittens. Hopefully someone loving and patient sees us and decides to give us a good home too, though! Can't adopt but want to help out? Oh my. You're so big! I'm Fünf. I'm quite a shy little girl and am still getting used to people. I find a lot of comfort in snuggling with my brother, Acht, so it would make me a lot happier to be adopted with him, but I would also be happy if I could just go to a home with another kitty. Despite being skittish, I'm a nice kitten, I just need someone who will be patient and give me time to open up in a quiet home. It is hard to tell how my brother and I would be with dogs, but I would probably be fine with an older, cat-friendly dog that gives me time and space to get used to them. If the dog is in my face and energetic, then that will likely scare me. Little kids scare me, to be honest. They have to be really good with kitties and understand that I don't want to be grabbed or forced to snuggle. So a home without kids or with kids that are respectful of my space would be ideal. Like I said, I LOVE other cats. I can't imagine going to a home without a cat in it. If my brother and I aren't adopted together, I still hope I'm with another cat. They're the best! I would make a wonderful young companion for a cat that is getting on in years or that is lonely and needs a playmate - I am both a massive snuggler and love to play with other cats. If you're looking to adopt a less-adoptable pet but still want a kitten, then maybe Acht and me are for you! People are still less likely to adopt black cats like us, sadly, and because we're still working on being socialized and are skittish, people often pass us up for the more snuggly and outgoing kittens.
